Can’t decide if it’s stomach bug or I’m dying

cryingonthesaledailts · 27/12/2025 16:05

I woke up with stomach pain that has slowly got worse. It was at a 6/7 and is now about an 8ish. Within the last hour, I’ve also developed a slight temperature

I feel FINE. Not particularly tired. Not feeling sick or any changes in toilet habits. But it’s so, so sore.

Middle of the stomach? Above belly button.

I don’t have a gallbladder or an appendix and this feels different to those pains when I did have them.

Do I just wait this out? So sore I’m quite shocked I otherwise feel normal beyond a slight temperature.

I do not have childcare for disabled DC so a hospital visit would mean emergency foster carers, so I’m reluctant to seek help unless it’s absolutely vital. ‘No harm in being seen’ isn’t actually true when it means your disabled child is left with strangers and you’ll spend ages on the phone to social carer emergency line. If there was a real emergency that was life and death, DC would have to go with the police until care was found etc

Both DC have had a stomach bug recently that started like this. I had started to consider DD might have appendicitis because she was in a lot of pain. (TMI - apologies) It was another 6/8 hours before she vomited. She only threw up once but had a mild fever and felt ropey for a couple of days after. DS was similar. He had a tummy ache in the morning then was sick late afternoon. He was sick quite a few times over the course of 4 hours but then it stopped.

Given your circumstances no illness is ‘good’ but this may be short lived if it’s the same.

Toothfairy89 · 27/12/2025 16:20

I normally find sickness bugs start as a sore stomach.

With no other symptoms I wouldnt be panicking just yet. I don't think you need to go to hospital with with some stomach. Wait it out for now

springintoaction2 · 27/12/2025 16:21

My DD (20) had a virus before Xmas that was very bad abdo pain, then severe diarrhoea, vomiting and fever. Lasted around 36 hours. It came on suddenly .

I’m concerned about your lack of s or d symptoms so it doesn’t just sound like a bug. What time did you wake up?

Grumpynan · 27/12/2025 16:23

I started like this in November really bad stomach cramps but was otherwise ok. Then it hit d&v like you wouldn’t believe. I was so ill for 6 days couldn’t kept water down became dehydrated. Nurse came out (I suffer from anxiety and can’t leave the house) said it was a virus was worried I was dehydrated.

I have eventually started to mend. I’m keeping fluids in and can eat small amounts if I’m careful. Been 6 weeks though. So take care and keep your fluids up

Allaboutthecats · 27/12/2025 16:25

Are you passing wind? Is your abdomen distended?

SnowDaysAndBadLays · 27/12/2025 16:25

I think you're about to get the shits.

Bigmomma88 · 27/12/2025 16:26

My appendicitis started exactly like this within 5 hours I was rolling around in a +e on the floor. Had emergency surgery before sunrise. I came in suddenly and got worse. Made my way to the hospital whilst I could still walk something did not feel right, glad I did. Please get itself to hospital if it's 8 outs 10 it must be pretty bad.

Bigmomma88 · 27/12/2025 16:27

Sirry just saw that you do not have an appendix

Justpeachy88 · 27/12/2025 16:28

I had an awful stomach bug 3 weeks ago that started like this…felt terrible for a week but feeling much better now although still very low on energy

Seawolves · 27/12/2025 16:29

My question was are you able to pass wind too? If you are not you need to be seen urgently.

Overthebow · 27/12/2025 16:30

Could it be appendicitis?

Seawolves · 27/12/2025 16:31

Overthebow · 27/12/2025 16:30

Could it be appendicitis?

Highly unlikely as the OP says she has no appendix

helpfulperson · 27/12/2025 16:33

What about phoning 111 and at least speaking to someone? They should be able to help you decide if a physical appointment is needed.

WarmGreyHare · 27/12/2025 16:34

Does it hurt when you press or is there anything to be felt?
Probably the start of a bug, but just in case, if it's just you and a disabled DC at home, can you make sure someone will be checking up on you regularly?

Edited to agree re 111.
The only thing that springs to my mind from your description is that I think it is around the location of the aorta.

Dontpokethebearnow · 27/12/2025 16:38

My DC recently had something very similar, to the point we were on a wait and watch approach for appendicitis!
Temperature was quite high (but also very much his usual MO) and stomach pain in the middle right above and over belly button.
No D&V appeared, no other symptoms at all just days of feeling normal then pain/temp but then suddenly normal again for a few hours then pain/temp. 3 days later was fine again.

Of course this doesn't mean it's the same and you don't need medical attention, but are you well enough to care for your DC or do you need to get someone to assist? Given your circumstances can you get to a GP tomorrow at least if you remain the same?

Are you taking both ibuprofen and paracetamol in stages?

MoserRothOrangeandAlmond · 27/12/2025 16:42

If you’re feeling fine otherwise I would wait it out. Are you able to keep fluids down? Are you passing wind? Have you moved your bowels?

she hasn’t got an appendix

JoanThursday · 27/12/2025 17:12

Ring 111 and seek advice.

It could 'just' be a virus. I know you said you haven't got a gallbladder ... but a close relative of mine suffered from excruciating gallstones symptoms years after she had hers removed. They found that gallbladder 'grit' had grown over a long time, creating a gallstone in her bile duct. She was in so much pain, felt sick and had a temperature.

Best to speak to someone, I think.

HoratioBum · 27/12/2025 17:22

Mum had this a couple of weeks ago, stomach pain, incredibly tender to the touch.
Next day, sickness and diarrhoea.
She was in bed for 3 days and then suddenly felt better.
So yeah, prepare for the shits.

cockandbullstories · 27/12/2025 17:30

Watch how this goes as it could be stones but in eg your bile duct. You say it's 8/10 but you feel fine so that's a bit confusing.

cockandbullstories · 27/12/2025 17:32

I see @JoanThursday has suggested this as well. It is agony.

Nucleus · 27/12/2025 17:36

I have had a lower grade version of this since 24th. For the first 24 hours, I put it down to having had a little too much to drink on 23rd. Except I then had a fever of 40C. I have barely eaten all Christmas, have not been sick or had diarrhoea, but very gassy at both ends and acid/sicky reflux. Gnawing upoer abdo pain with intermittent cramps, but i have a high pain threshold. I am now assuming I have a bug and will be better in a few days.

I think if I was an 8/10 pain, in your position, I would phone 111.

cockandbullstories · 28/12/2025 11:35

Update @cryingonthesaledailts?

cryingonthesaledailts · 28/12/2025 12:47

Hey, typing from hospital bed! I have Pancreatitis

Never would’ve guessed as it didn’t feel flooring enough, if that’s even a word. But all the symptoms matched up and bingo, diagnosis within about 3 hours of admission to A&E
