What will you do NYE if you’re by yourself?

I could go away somewhere. Not really the partying kind and my closest friends have partners or family. What would you do if you were me?

I’ll be distracting my cat from the firework noise, either playing or cuddling & with music on & curtains closed.

dailyconniptions · 27/12/2025 09:17

Every year I ignore it. I do what I'd do any other evening and go to bed at 10. It's totally over-rated shite. You don't need to do anything, OP.

Followthatpath · 27/12/2025 09:29

I know i don’t need to do anything, but I want to do something. We usually make it a special evening in some way, either a family party or special dinner, or a break away.

I'm always by myself as I detest New Year's Eve. When a lot younger always used to go out with friends, pubs didn't have ticketed entry or charge you so you could go round the area in and out of them and stay in the last one for midnight. Always had a great time.

For the last 30 years I now stay in, used to be with the cat(s), fireworks used to terrify them and often go to bed before midnight. I no longer have any pets so I usually go to bed around 11ish and take a glass of something fizzy up with me. Once midnight comes, I get text messages from friends and family, toast the New Year with the alcohol and once the firework bombardment stops, I usually fall asleep.

Boring but it's just how I like it.

Theimpossiblegirl · 27/12/2025 22:21

I'm on my own this year and quite looking forward to it. I'm planning a nice long run, a bath then tv in my pjs, a nice bottle of wine and cheese board.

Vodkamartini3olives · 27/12/2025 23:43

I'm alone this yr. All my family have gone skiing. During the day I'm going to do a massive clean. At just before 4pm I'll get on a video call with my mum and the rest of my family in UK so I can see the new year in with them. Then I'm heading off the the 'fancy' cinema to watch Wicked with steak and wine. Cab home and drink a bottle of Cava or 2 on the couch and watch New years with Andy Cohen &. Anderson Cooper.

flumpsfortea · 27/12/2025 23:53

I have never had an NYE alone but if I did I really like the idea of a spa hotel. I’d spend the day cleaning and sorting the house so it would be nice to come home to, I’d pick up some posh snacks and wine for the room then I’d use the facilities after dark as it feels a bit more of an event somehow. Swim, sauna, steam, relax by the pool with a book then a fluffy robe, slippers and snacks in the room. Hopefully a massive comfy bed and watch the fireworks on TV.

echt · 28/12/2025 00:25

I get both worlds.

A dear friend has a NYE brunch, BYO alcohol so I walk there and back and can have a drink.

The evening is like all others, watch a film, enlivened by sending messages to rels and friends at midnight - setting an alarm in case I nod off.

MinnieMountain · 28/12/2025 13:20

I've got a 1/2 bottle of Waitrose champagne and some fancy cheese nibbles waiting for when DH and DS are away in February (I needed to spend a voucher). If I was alone on NYE, I'd add a nice supermarket fish pie to that and have it watching Jools Holland.

Imaginary86 · 29/12/2025 11:34

takeaway and read a book. Hate new years

MellowCoralFinch · 29/12/2025 11:50

I'm going for lunch with my family and my brother's girlfriend's parents but in the evening I will be alone. My brother will be at his girlfriend's family's house and my parents will be in the pub. I only have one friend and she will be at home with her parents. They are older than mine. I live with my mum because I'm disabled. I hate New Year's so much and can't wait until it is over. I always feel lonely and like a Billy No Mates. I will watch TV and browse Reddit.

Poisonwood · 29/12/2025 11:52

Read my book, maybe do some of my new jigsaw, some yoga, go to bed around 10pm. Forced gaiety is not my strong suit, this is my idea of a good night.

Aw if I lived near you, I’d pop round and treat you & your Mum to a fancy meal, a bit of company - maybe a board game or company during a film - and a glass of bubbly at midnight. I’m sorry you’re lonely. Me too! 😭 Maybe we should spend it online!

Ive got young teen and older teen. Young teen will be gaming in their room and older teen at a party. Ill do picky food, watch telly on my own and go and pick up older teen at 1am. I don't drink so 🚕

BrendaSmall · 29/12/2025 17:29

I can’t even remember the last time I was awake at midnight on NYE!
we’ve usually tucked up in bed by 9 and not even the fireworks wake me up

TheDandyLion · 29/12/2025 17:36

Tasty dinner, a bath and an early night. I'd rather get up early for the new year sunrise than try and stay up for the midnight bells.

Twodogsisbetterthanone · 29/12/2025 17:38

I absolutely hate New Year’s Eve, I’m not sure if it’s the ‘enforced fun’ aspect of it, just something about it jars me. I’ve had some really weird nights out or at parties where the vibe was just ‘off’.

Id quite like to go out for dinner, but be home for the fireworks to settle the animals, but don’t think we have the spare cash after all the Christmas festivities.

BootsandCatss · 29/12/2025 17:48

Probably cry if I’m honest. My cousin has let slip today that all of my family are going away for NYE and celebrating it all together, I’ve not been invited again. Third time this year I’ve been left out of family events, although I suppose it’s better I know now instead of finding out through a picture posted on FB.

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 29/12/2025 17:58

I'll be in bed. I was meant to be going out new year's day with a friend but that's kind of dropped off. May go out somewhere on my own and just go for a really long walk or find somewhere to go that I've not been to for ages.

Sundriessundries · 29/12/2025 18:28

Couple of glasses of wine and some nice snacks. Mumsnet. Don’t bother staying up. Then do something nice on New Year’s Day (depends on what you enjoy but day out or meal somewhere?)

Jesus, that’s harsh. Why on earth would they exclude you like that? I’m so sorry.

That's so sweet❤️ My mum will be in the pub with my dad so she'll be alright. I wouldn't mind but they argue a lot when drunk and they aren't happily married but my dad has to get his way. Oh well. I'll just have to get through the day and I'll be relieved when everything is back to normal.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 29/12/2025 21:08

I like being on my own for NYE, but that's because I am an introvert, and usually too tired from work to bother with anyone else!

I'll have a shower and dinner, and then either find something to read, or something to watch, and then I'll have to knit along to keep myself occupied (and to add a few more inches to the cardigan that I'm making). I'll go to bed early, and if I can hear any fireworks from the nearest town, then I will be cursing them, because I'll be up and milking cows not long after the celebrants have probably gone to bed!
