Hello all and Merry Christmas!

The inevitable tech problem on Christmas Day 😬

Daughter has been given a MacBook Air 2022. Spec etc still looked great even though not latest model but now saying she can't download TikTok and YouTube apps etc.

Does anyone know if this is true and if there's any way round it?

She's been very appreciative but this has thrown me.

Thanks in advance for any info or advice x

I know that's what I thought?! But I accept I know nothing in the face of a teenager and tech...

Thank you, will check the link. I did do a quick Google but only use Android myself so am clueless when it comes to Apple.

I don't know if it's the norm to use app versions of TikTok etc on a MacBook or whether most people use the browser versions. She seemed to think this would be lots of hassle having to login each time...

You absolutely can download apps on the MacBook.

You usually just do it through the App Store icon on the MacBook so if that’s not working, I’m afraid I’m not much help.

ByronKoala · 25/12/2025 15:06

She really doesn’t need to download them - just use the browser versions. MacBooks aren’t made for TikTok scrolling to be brutally honest!

That's what I thought as although it's not the latest model surely lots of young people have this 2022 version still and use TikTok etc 🤔

Yes, you’d think it would be possible. I don’t do social media so I don’t have the likes of TikTok on my Mac but I have other apps and I know my partner has Facebook. It might just be that TikTok don’t offer a Mac app at all?

Heckate · 25/12/2025 15:09

I don't use Macs either.

Sounds strange. She’s trying to download via the App Store? What does the error message say?

I don't think they do but she seems to think everyone does so wondered if there was a workaround..

Aaarghhh I feel like a dinosaur!

Has she checked for OS updates and installed them? I would make sure it's fully up to date and then retry.

vanillalattes · 25/12/2025 15:15

She should be able to download them via the App store.

But honestly, laptops in general aren't built for TikTok - that's what phones are for! She can use YouTube via the browser.

I looked it up and they don’t make a TikTok app for Mac, so she’ll need to use a workaround like an emulator which is a PITA, but agree TikTok would not be great on a Mac. It’s make for phones.

Will make sure that's done just in case, thank you.

She just needs to put TikTok app for Mac into the safari browser and she’ll get the page from which to download it.

Yep, thought the same for TikTok but for YouTube thought would be nicer to view on the MacBook too x

Yeti that's what was worried about, that not straightforward and needs workaround.

You can just use YouTube via the Safari browser - you don't need an app.

Clefable · 25/12/2025 15:25

Silly question, but she knows how to access web pages etc? You don’t need apps for those things as you just visit them in your browser, so she can just go to YouTube.com to watch her stuff.

Sometimes kids have never used a proper laptop and are used to a tablet etc where it’s all apps. But for a laptop plenty of stuff is still browser-based. The internet browser (Safari, Chrome) is where she will get the stuff she wants to see.

I'll double check though pretty sure she's trying that but for some reason can't get it 😬

And she won’t have to log in every time. Once she’s logged in on browser she will stay logged in.
