Big dog tips

We got our first family dog in March. He’s just under a year and is a lurcher/retriever cross.

Huge boy, powerful. Lovely nature.

I am still finding it overwhelming.

Can owners of large breeds give me your best tips to make life with a big, boisterous hound that little bit more manageable?!

Ps we love him. This is not a regretful post
:)

@Netaporter - great advice. I miss my Leonberger 🥲

Aww sorry to hear that. Mine is nearly 9 so I’m acutely aware we’re getting into the latter stages of life 😢

This is exactly why I asked! Such great advice. A lot of which I know but am
not doing… yet!!

Thank you all so much.

75kg eek! Leonburgers are gorgeous 💙

Mine is 35kg at 11 months. He’s very lanky! Maybe a little more growing to do.

Gorgeous but the mess is next level 😂

@Netaporter - yes, the downside of giant breed is the shorter lifespan. I probably don’t miss so much when they’re blowing their coat for the summer - days of this after a 10 minute brush. Showed my mum a photo like this once, her eyesight wasn’t great and she thought it was one of my large fluffy cats 😂

I can identify. All I'll say is that we have Pyreneans and the shedding never ends.

I have an entirely White House so with hindsight a Pyrenean would have been a better bet 😂

Ah yes. My groomer wears goggles when it is the great coat shed. She got a dustbin full of hear from last year’s 😱

Ironically, I'm kind of gothic/witchy and wear a lot of black 🙄

We have a black dog, and a black kitchen floor. When he was a pup, it was easy to trip over him.
