Is anyone else intolerant to alcohol? Is is permanent?

I have self diagnosed this but I cannot cope with alcohol and its getting worse and worse.

Ive always got drunk very quickly off very little and had terrible hangovers.
Its got worse over the years and I now very rarely drink alcohol..maybe twice a year.
It just makes me so horribly ill.
Not like a normal hangover but full on migraine, bad stomach, aching all over, cannot function, last for days and days, if I drink Friday I am in bed in dark with migraine for entire weekend and still feel rough all week. Its just not worth it.

However I miss not being able to have a tiny drink. I had a shandy earlier in the week and woke up with blinding headache I cant shift for days.

Does anyone else experience this? If you are intolerant to a food/drink - are you always intolerant?

Alcohol is a common trigger for migraines and you are highly unlikely to grow out of it. There are some great alcohol free beers now, so give some of them a try if you miss the taste. It's a lot easier to be alcohol free and still have decent drinks now.

Are you menopausal?
Histamine Intolerance is a thing.
I stopped drinking 9 years ago during peri as I break out in itchy hives, go bright red and get get a clanging headache from just a few sips
Best thing I ever did !

A friend is like this. He is of south Asian descent. I’m not too clear on the science but apparently some people lack an enzyme (?) that breaks down alcohol.
Women in peri also find changes in what they can tolerate. Personally, I have given up red wine because it started to give me night sweats although my general tolerance for alcohol is high.

I dont drink anymore because if the effort it hsd on me. Im perimenopause. I drive alcohol free. Don't miss it at all.

I've always flushed in my cheeks when I drink.
Now I'm in peri, I do still drink but only at lunch until late afternoon (not the whole time, just my window!)
. Never after 6pm or it compromises my sleep too much.
But I don't get ill like you do. I do however have awful awful hangovers if I have more than one drink!

I can’t really drink now either. Just one glass of wine makes me feel like I have had half a bottle or more. It’s quite annoying as I have never been a big drinker but I really enjoy an occasional glass or two of wine.

I have since I was a teen had bad reflux/ indigestion and blocked sinuses/rash /headache due to alcohol. It took a lot of years to figure it out but I don’t drink often now and never in excess

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 22/12/2025 12:09

I've had this for years - came on when I started to drink alcohol again after birth of dc. The only thing I can tolerate nowadays is gin and tonic, and even then, only a few times a year. A hospital consultant (seen for another reason) said it could be a yeast intolerance rather than an alcohol one.

To be honest, alcohol made me feel so ill it was like aversion therapy, and I actively don't want to touch the stuff at all. My instinct is now "Ugh, no!" rather than "I really miss it".

Thanks everyone. I guessed this may be the case.
Im normally fine 90% of the year not drinking, it bores me, I like driving places, I like not being ill but sometimes it hard being the only sober person in the room...apart from anything its sooo boring!

Guess ill have to suck it up!

Fortunately ive built up a lot of friendships which are not based on alcohol
