Being ill on the lead up to Christmas is hard!

Myself and DH have had this horrible cough/cold virus that's doing the rounds. I've now broken up for Christmas, and it's like my body has given up on me 🤣. Aching, coughing, feeling like general shit.
Still loads to do for Christmas and also need to keep dc entertained. DH is working till Christmas Eve, so makes sense for me to do most of the sorting as I've got more time. I just don't have the energy.
It will all come together, I'm sure. This is just a self pitying rant...

I feel you, we've had the weird cold thing since the 2nd week of December, it's still here 13 days later and as a result feeling very unchristmassy and very behind.

Try and be as kind to yourself as possible and put on Christmas music or TV or films etc and do as much as possible online or delegate to well people / kids if old enough to take the sting out of it.

Hope you're feeling better soon ❤️

I feel you OP. Teen DS is just starting to get over an upper respiratory infection and tonsillitis after TWO weeks, I’ve been off work for a week as he kindly shared it, along with chest and ear infections - go me! - and DD has now started coughing. I haven’t slept over an hour in the last week due to coughing and we are going away for Christmas this year in two days. I feel like utter crap, my house is a mess and we are nowhere near ready. I’m working tomorrow and I’m also a single Mum. This will be my 4th Christmas ill. Sorry for the reciprocal rant but I really feel for you, this is the worst possible time right?!

simpsonthecat · 21/12/2025 11:29

Big sympathy for everyone suffering.

I've had this (whatever it is) for a week and a half now. Banging headache, the worst sore throat I have ever had lasting 4 days, now one ear blocked and it feels like someone is stabbing inside my ear every 20 seconds. Oh... plus the cough.
Feel shit

I'm sending good vibes out to everyone that this shifts for you all before Christmas day. 🎁🧑‍🎄🎄

Same here, it's not easy is it. I'm just hoping I can wing it bit by bit and make it through so my daughter has a great Christmas. Been exhausted like nothing else for weeks

SparrowSally · 21/12/2025 16:13

I've just managed to pop into town to grab last couple of stocking fillers, so that's sorted at least! DH is cleaning downstairs, so feel like we're getting somewhere.

Last push to get last few bits wrapped, then I'm going to soak in a hot bath....

I broke my foot last week. It's DS birthday tomorrow. I can hobble slightly but very limited in what I can do. I've been so stressed but may have to just accept things won't get done how they normally would, and sit in the sofa with a drink in hand..

SparrowSally · 21/12/2025 22:03

Hope you aren't in too much pain @Wickeswench Sofa and drink definitely sounds like a good plan.

Dr confirmed yesterday I have a chest infection, which certainly explains a lot! Feel better soon everyone!

I was achy and run down yesterday. Then spent the night vomiting. Still no fever, but I am only drinking sips of tea and just can’t get out of bed.

Today was supposed to be groceries and baking. I just can’t.

Husband went grocery shopping. Thankfully the list as done. Teenager says she is going to try to bake some. Based on past experience, I expect meltdowns from both of them and I am just too tired to deal with anything.

Thank you
Still feel ill. Completely deaf in one ear, bad cough. Every time I get a glimmer of hope I'm improving, I just go back again
And I have soooo much to do!

Glad you got a diagnosis OP!

Ladyymuck · 24/12/2025 07:13

I’ve had whatever is on the go for 3 weeks (cough, ear infection, chest infection, sinus) and it’s got worse in the last week which is typical as I’m now on leave from work. I have no energy left and am really having to push through as I’m hosting tomorrow and away ski-ing next week and all I want to do is crawl back into bed. No-one else I live with or am in close contact has it or has had it. Have an appointment with the nurse later on so possibly will get a course of antibiotics.

Rockfordpeach · 24/12/2025 07:17

I have MS and had a relapse beginning of December and couldnt walk, ive recovered my mobility and balance but my god, the fatigue! I feel like im walking through treacle and the simplest task requires an hour's rest. Very much struggling to get through xmas on top. My consultant prescribed me a course of high dose steroids yesterday and im pinning all my hopes that will make me slightly more functional

Grumblies · 24/12/2025 07:21

Another here who has what DH is affectionately calling the plague. The cough has been driving me mad for weeks but seems to have become worse since I finished for Christmas, my head is pounding and my nose is definitely redder than Rudolph's!

Sending virtual hugs (because let's be honest no one should be hugging us in real life) and I hope you all manage to get through hosting today and tomorrow and we can crawl into bed and recover soon.

magpie234 · 24/12/2025 07:24

Me too! Bronchitis. On day 11. Feeling a bit better but the cough and really quite severe fatigue are lingering on. I am 21 weeks pregnant so I think it is hitting me especially hard as my immune system is lower. Hope everyone feels better soon and can find some lowkey festive joy despite it. Better luck for us all next year!

simpsonthecat · 24/12/2025 07:27

I do hope everyone pulls through and feels better

At the moment I just cannot imagine feeling well.

summerday25 · 24/12/2025 07:54

Glad you managed to get confirmation it was something @SparrowSallydid they give you antibiotics to help? @simpsonthecatalso completely deaf on the one side too - it’s really odd, not having anything before that’s made me lose my hearing! We’ve still managed to get away but youngest now has it and we’re all exhausted, but in lovely surroundings so that’s something at least.

SparrowSally · 24/12/2025 08:19

@summerday25 5 day course of amoxicillin here! It's weird, since having it confirmed, I feel worse than ever. Almost like I have permission now to be properly ill. Guess its because I couldn't stop as lots to do to sort out Christmas?

OP posts:
simpsonthecat · 24/12/2025 09:07

@summerday25 I am glad I'm not the only one! (but sympathies too) The stabbing pains in my ear have gone so I suppose I just have to wait for my hearing to come back.
I am so nervous about getting antibiotics after, out the blue, having a dangerous anaphylactic shock with amoxicillin a year or two ago. (I'd had amoxicillin before) It was terrifying and so quick. I know they can prescribe different penicillin, and if this hasn't gone after christmas I will have to brace myself and go back to Doc.

ChubbyPuffling · 24/12/2025 09:23

Xmas cancelled here. Apart from the food, we have a shed load of food!
MIL passed away at the weekend (sad, but expected), DH and BIL arranging everything to do with that.
DD25 has the lurgy/plague/whatever,
Ddog14 has conjunctivitis and needs 2 different eyedrops (6 lots a day... six!)

We'll cope... just about...

simpsonthecat · 24/12/2025 09:25

Sorry to hear that Chubby, how difficult right on Christmas.
💐

Grumblies · 24/12/2025 09:34

Gosh Chubby that definitely sounds like a Christmas to write off! I hope things improve for the new year.

familyissues12345 · 24/12/2025 10:12

This is the first year in years that I havent have some sort of lurgy just before Christmas, it’s lovely!

Hope all you poorly ones are feeling better soon x

Dawninglory · 24/12/2025 20:23

Hope you all feel better soon, condolences for your loss Chubby. My main oven packed up on Monday and I have a small top oven to cook on for next 2wks until Bosh can come to fix it! Lots of Champagne 🍾 and patience tomorrow!!

Furbabylady500 · 24/12/2025 20:35

I've had it on and off all month (the joys of kids at school) but today it's came back with a vengeance 😭. For once I had everything ready ahead of time thank god! It's all about the hot toddy's and rest today, my dogs have made sure of that by pinning me down 😂
Hope everyone feels better soon and merry xmas for tomorrow
