Audio book narrators who can’t do a convincing accent

I’m a big fan of audio books BUT it drives me insane when narrators try and speak in an accent that they clearly can’t do!!

surely if the book requires a specific accent, you ensure the narrator can copy that accent or they don’t get the job?

Listening to a great book but the narrator has a very strong American accent and then tries to do an Irish or Scottish accent and it’s absolutely dreadful!!!

Yes that would annoy me, why do they have to use an accent anyway ? Surely that’s acting (attempted!) rather than reading. When you read a book to yourself you dont ‘read’ in an accent do you ? at least I don’t.

I've just experienced this for the first time and it was very annoying! It's a non-fiction nook too, so absolutely no need for any acting. The book is written by an American and narrated by an American but there are quotes from (real, and in some cases famous) British people. Not only is the narrator bad at the RP-ish English accent he attempts, he also uses the same accent for someone who's Welsh! It was really cringe-inducing!
