Is it bad form to take half a bottle of gin?

Spending Christmas Day with fairly new friends … I’ve offered to take a few bottles of wine, fizz, cheeseboard and chocs. I also might fancy a couple of GnTs but should I buy a new one or take one from the drinks cupboard?

If it’s just for you to drink who cares? Take what you want OP

Buy a new one! And make sure you take some tonic too.

Take the one from the drinks cupboard. That would be totally fine in my house & circle of friends, we all do it.

Take a new one

You wouldn't do it with food - you wouldn't take a half eaten turkey to someones house would you?

twinklebiglight · 19/12/2025 17:33

Buy some premixed cans

youalright · 19/12/2025 17:35

I think its fine aslong as you're taking other unopened drinks to.

AutumnClouds · 19/12/2025 17:36

I think fine to take open bottles of spirits, it’s not the only thing you’re taking. Anyone who didn’t like it I wouldn’t want to be friends with!

I agree. If that was the only thing you were taking, buy new. But alongside other newly bought bits, open bottle is fine.

Take a new one. Someone else might like some.

Peridot1 · 19/12/2025 17:44

I’d have to take a new one. You don’t know if someone else will want some. It just seems odd to take an opened one.

A new one, plus a small pack of those little cans of tonic, and a lime/lemon/orange. And, of course, leave them with anything that's not used on the day. You need to be generous.

She already is being generous, why does she need to gift them new gin and tonics too? Some people have money to throw away on here!

BotterMon · 19/12/2025 17:52

I'd be taken aback if somebody turned up with an open bottle of something but then I wouldn't expect people to bring their own spirits as have them here.

You'd be better off taking a couple of pre mixed cans but would hope than anyone hosting would have most drinks available.

Christmas Day costs mega bucks! Just take a new bottle of gin with posh tonics , lemon, lime etc and leave it there unless they twist your arm to take it home. You are still quids
in!

beadystar · 19/12/2025 18:47

I’d take a new one. It’s Christmas Day and they’re new friends. Be generous. Lots of spirits on offer at the moment too. When they’re old friends or a if it’s a casual event no one cares about an open bottle.
