Anyone else still sick after 2 weeks?

I came down with a cold a couple of weeks ago. Initially a sore throat and fever, then I felt a bit better for a day but then the following day had lost my voice, had blocked sinuses and generally felt rubbish. I have a fever that seems to come and go a bit sometimes I'm feeling ok and others I feel really unwell and feverish and at those times I do have a temperature. I have also developed a bit of a cough now and my voice is still not back.

I have so much to do for Christmas and am trying to get bits done but am easily exhausted. I went to the shops yesterday after putting it off for the past 2 weeks, masked up and today I could hardly move and my joints are aching.

I feel like I should be better by now but I just seem to be the same. I can't really afford anymore time off and DH is getting a bit frustrated that I'm still not over it which I can understand as I'd probably feel the same.

Is anyone else finding this still lingering on and on? Not sure if I should go to the GP as I don't think I have a bacterial infection so I don't need antibiotics.

Yes same, on week 3 here. This past week I’ve been much worse, feverish and barely able to get out of bed. I got antibiotics for a chest infection on Friday. Definitely worth ringing the docs, even for a phone appointment? That’s what I did initially. So many people are down with it though, it’s awful. Really hope you start to feel better soon. I’m feeling very sorry for myself because I’ve completely lost my sense of smell and taste 😭

lexreps · 14/12/2025 19:57

@GrannyClanger I'm really sorry to hear you're suffering as well, it's vile isn't it? I'll see how I am tomorrow and then perhaps call the surgery and see what they say.

I’m on day 10 here, I think I have so some sort of Mini Flu, not The Super Flu, but something, it’s rubbish!

Yep. Still coughing, chest still hurts, my knees hurt, my face is swollen, my heart keeps doing something peculiar and my voice is croaky.
And today I've got an ulcer on the roof of my mouth.

lexreps · 14/12/2025 20:02

@TokyoSushi Yeah I agree, its definitely worse than a normal cold but not the full on flu either. I tested negative for covid also. I think it might be viral walking pneumonia but I really have no idea. If it's viral I think I just have to wait it out.

@DarkEyedSailor Oww, that sounds horrible😔, hope you feel better soon.

Day 10 for me

I actually burst into tears today ! I spent last week looking after sick baby and was nearly in a&e twice cus I couldn’t get his fever down - and as a result let my care slide - the kids were at me all morning and I cracked and just burst out crying - husband took them away and I just cried in my bed - sick of it - have nothing organised now for the Xmas break and it all feels so overwhelming

lexreps · 14/12/2025 20:12

@Fupoffyagrasshole How awful for you. I really hope you start feeling better soon, its so much harder with little ones and a sick baby. Please take the pressure off yourself to have things planned for the break and try and enjoy some time at home as you recover (easier said than done I know).

I started with a stabbing feeling in my throat two weeks ago. Over the next week it developed into a very full on cold and my voice went - not great when you work in a school! Then came the cough. Not chesty, but a throaty cough. Bad enough during the day, but kept me up for several nights. In fact, I ended up taking a day off sick - something I last did just after COVID, when immunity was low due to being in lockdown. I still have a cough, though it is improving, and still needing to blow my nose frequently, but again, it is improving. I don't know that it was flu - I had my jab in October, but it was definitely more than a cold. Lots of hot drinks and paracetamol seemed to help.
Hope you all recover soon. 💐

Mum and Dad are at the end of week 3 and only just starting to feel a little better. Whatever the fuck is going round, its nastyyyy

ShanghaiDiva · 14/12/2025 20:50

Day 15 for me and Dh and finally starting to feel better. Not flu, but the worst cold I have ever had- my ribs ache from all the coughing and my body seems to have produced gallons of phlegm.
Hope you start to feel better soon.

Crumptes · 14/12/2025 20:54

See, given all the posts on MN about how flu can be asymptomatic or not particularly serious, I'm wondering if this is the flu that is going round? I felt ill for over two weeks, including headaches and nausea. Other colleagues of mine were worse, in bed for several days. I work in a school and the same illness has affected a lot of children and nearly every member of staff so whatever it is, it's unusually contagious. I'm pretty sure we all had the same thing just in varying severities.

CalmShaker · 14/12/2025 20:57

Had something for past week but think it's almost gone now. Felt like a cold but also not, weird headaches and dreams thrown into the mix and nose running 1 hour and not the next.
There are some bizarre illnesses out there now, I'm convinced COVID was the start of many other man made bugs being released, none of this feels natural to me

Shmee1988 · 14/12/2025 20:58

Can I ask why you all seem to think its not the flu? Just curious

icebearforpresident · 14/12/2025 21:06

Roughly day 12 for me. Kids had it first then one of them coughed right in my face and 24 hours later I got a bit of a tickly cough. That was the Wednesday, on Thursday, Friday & Saturday I got out of bed but didn’t get dressed or leave the house and had lots of naps during the day - ‘luckily’ I was on annual leave from work, going back tomorrow. Mini flu is a good description, much worse than a cold but not full on flu (although I’ve had my vaccination so I did wonder if it would be full on flu if I hadn’t had it) and tested negative for Covid. Husband, obviously, has managed to avoid it altogether.

I now feel fine but still got the cough, it seemed to be getting better but has gone backwards over the last few days. My voice is cracking and I can’t laugh without it turning into a coughing fit. Husband describes it as sounding like I’ve got a 40 a day habit all of a sudden. I’ve had similar before and all the GP could give me was co-codomol (I think) as it helps to surpass coughing. This time though MIL
is going through chemo and we’re at hers for Christmas so could really do with it buggering off.

lexreps · 14/12/2025 21:08

@Shmee1988 Because it's not as bad as when I've had flu in the past I guess.

@Crumptes You could be right, apparently its older and younger kids that are affected worst.

@ShanghaiDiva That gives me hope that I'll start to feel better soon! Hope your recovery continues apace.

For me anyway, my understanding of what flu is like is much worse than I’ve been feeling. I had a few days in my pyjamas but I could still get up and do things and haven’t had the aches and pains, apart from the first day I felt ill, you would get with flu.

Wowsersbrowsers · 14/12/2025 21:08

I needed antibiotics to clear it too. Worth getting checked out.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 14/12/2025 21:18

I rang 111 today and they’ve now prescribed me antibiotics ! I hate to take them normally but at this stage il try anything

il be picking them up tomorrow

PigeonsandSquirrels · 14/12/2025 21:23

Unfortunately I got this in September. It carried on for 6 goddamn weeks… GP was ready to send off sputum tests but thankfully antibiotics kicked it.

It was really weird and got worse and better with a range of cough, cold, sinus, fever, headaches. Felt really random.

RenoDakota · 14/12/2025 21:24

I started feeling nauseous about two and a half weeks ago. That continued for about a week and I lost five pounds as could only bear to eat a little plain food (toast, jacket potatoes, mashed potato). While that was going on the cold symptoms came on - sneezing, sweating and sore throat, followed by the most hideous hacking cough. It has only just all died down today.
Not the flu as I didn't have the aches and pains and could still function, dosed up with Day Nurse, although was exhausted. Definitely the worst cold I have ever had. Not Covid as I tested three times. Had the flu jab mid October.

I think because I can still function, I feel rubbish but can still go about my day to day life anyway. I think with Super Flu you’d be in bed, but Mini Flu, just crack on feeling awful!

have had flu before and had a fever, my head felt like it was in a vice and my whole body ached. Have not had any of those symptoms with this cold and have still been able to function.

MiddleAgedDread · 15/12/2025 10:20

i haven't had a fever (or maybe only a little a bit the first couple of days) but I've had cold symptoms in various forms for so many weeks now I've lost count. It started with a razor sore throat, sinus pain and blocked ears, I've been through snotty sneezing spells, a barking cough, tight chest, still got sinus pain and a headache today. It's driving me crazy, I just want to feel properly well!

LeFxX · 11/02/2026 20:43

Hey @lexreps hopefully you’re much better now!? Do you remember at all when you started to get over this awful bug?

I came down with a horrid cold about 2 weeks ago and started to feel better for 2-3 days and then out of nowhere woke up with my sinuses totally blocked. Couldn’t breathe through my nose and throat hurt again. 5 days on and I’m still exactly the same except with pain in my teeth, jaw and around my eye on one side of my face.

It’s awful and I’m so over it now 😩 have a 3 year old who’s the same too, my two other kids and husband got over it within a week maybe but me and my son are still suffering.
