How would this change you opinion of someone?

I have realised someone I travel with frequently dodges the full fare.

He basically buys the ticket using a railcard discount he's not entitled to. All barriers are automatic and I've never seen an inspector on one of these (local) trains.

His argument is the tickets are too expensive (which they are, £26 for a 30 min journey) and they get what they deserve.

I've been thinking about why I don't do it, and TBH it's probably more to do with the fear of getting caught (even though the risk is small), than any great moral virtue, but even so, I don't like what I've learned about him.

My concerns would be:

  1. Does he need to do this? Can he comfortably afford the full price?

  2. Do other people need it more? Are the trains busy enough that he might take a seat from someone that used the discount? (I’m assuming elderly or disabled).

If he is low income and it doesn’t harm anybody I couldn’t be upset about it.

It’s happening all the time. It’s because everyone feels ripped off by inflation. It’s sad.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 11/12/2025 14:06

I think I’d be less bothered by this than say, shop lifting. No idea why.

The trains can be crowded but no one ever doesn't get on.

I think he can pay. He's not living a money's no object life but he has money for days out etc. Likes a bargain or a voucher code, but so do I.

The train wouldn't feel the difference.

I actually find it terrible, if he can’t afford it he should take the bus instead, the low wage thing means nothing, plenty of people don’t dodge things and forgo a lot so they can pay for things that are tough to stomach!

There isn't a bus alternative.

Also plenty of people do it. I saw a whole gang on rollerskates sail through the barrier at Stratford yesterday.

Good for him.

Train fares are daylight robbery.

Hadalifeonce · 11/12/2025 14:15

I have had my Railcard checked before, it does happen, but not every time.

fatphalange · 11/12/2025 14:16

I couldn’t care less personally. It’s his risk to take

Tryingatleast · 11/12/2025 14:17

oh come on, the other people do it means nothing, anyone can justify anything, doesn’t mean it’s not stealing. Some of us scrape together money or don’t go, if it’s for the job then it’s a necessary expense or else he finds something closer.

DeanStockwell · 11/12/2025 14:18

The more people dodge fares the more the train companies will put the fares up for those that do pay .

I've had mine checked often, but not on this local train line.

Of course and I've said it make me uncomfortable, but I was responding to PP to said others do pay, even if it's not easy for them. If its about what "others" do, plenty don't pay too.

This is shite. They put the prices up to protect shareholders’ profits.
