Night 5 of DD having this hideous virus that's doing the rounds but the cough she has with it is driving us all a little insane, we haven't slept more than a solid two hours since Wednesday night.
she's got a humidifier on in her room, mattress elevated, had honey, saline nasal spray and her inhaler. Point blank refused to have a vapour bath tonight which I know would have helped loads. Is there anything that you have found works?

thanks in advance from one painfully tired parent.

Are you allowed to rub Vicks on them these days? I used to rub it on chest and backs and squeeze a Karvol capsule on their pillow, but they're not made any more.

Vapour plug in. Olbus oil on muslin cloth. Broncho stop junior medicine

Ilikewinter · 09/12/2025 21:49

Is it a dry or chesty cough? If its dry make sure you aren't drying the air out too much, it can cause a dry throat and irritate the cough.

Came on to say Broncho kids. Warm bath before bed. Not side sleeping.

EmbroideredGardener · 09/12/2025 21:52

I wouldnt put vicks in the bath she's getting in. But maybe one of the plug in menthol smelly things (brain fart!) Or put vicks on her feet with socks on, as well as chest etc. Exputex to thin and loosen any phlegm if she has any and plenty of fluids

Dr13Hadley · 09/12/2025 21:58

@EmbroideredGardener I was also going to say Vicks on feet under socks. Don’t know why but it works like magic! My DS (12) also has the cough so I feel your pain OP. He won’t keep socks on in bed though!

You can buy olbas oil bubble bath.

I usually add a wee touch of olbas oil in the vaporiser part of our humidifier.

Vicks on feet especially under toes / top end of foot if that makes sense. To do with meridians / acupressure points for the lungs. Really works!

Ok will give this a try. Fingers crossed

Calcough medicine is the only one that seems to have an effect for us.

YourZippyHare · 09/12/2025 22:28

How old is she? I know a pharmacist who swears by covonia cough medicine... I think there are different versions suitable for different age ranges. How about a strepsil before bed?

zoomzoomzoomz · 09/12/2025 23:18

Thankyou all so much, sorry should have mentioned she's 6.
she has Vicks on chest and back but won't keep socks on unfortunately. Have stuck some olbas oil on a muslin and have ordered some broncho stop so here's hoping!
its a really phlegmy cough to the point the minute she rolls off her pillows she's coughing a load up and having to spit it out, sorry tmi.
ive tried to get her to have some warm honey and lemon but it was disgusting apparently so no luck there.

Clove of garlic, crushed between two spoons, swallowed first thing in the morning with a big glass of water chaser.

as an adult I accept that it’s worth it to shake off a cold and cough. How my mother ever got me to swallow it as a child I have no idea. Good luck.

DrEmilyCrabtree · 10/12/2025 13:44

Try giving piriton, especially before bed. It seems to calm the mucus. Really worked well for my dd. Also fresh orange juice can help break the mucus down.

idrinkandiknowthings · 10/12/2025 13:47

I've read that pineapple juice is good for coughs. Never tried it though!

It's also the rankest cough medicine that exists 😂, bit OK if you don't know any different.

zoomzoomzoomz · 10/12/2025 19:55

@DrEmilyCrabtreei did exactly this last night and she slept great, I think it gave her just enough relief to be able to fall into a deep sleep.

her cough is still there today but nowhere near as bad as it was so hopefully we'll have another good night tonight. Felt like a new woman after a full 7 hours last night 😂

Its like magic isn't it! A pharmacist told me about it, when dd was really suffering. I only wish I'd known earlier

zoomzoomzoomz · 10/12/2025 20:03

@DrEmilyCrabtree yes amazing! I've actually written it down so I don't forget for next time in my sleep deprived state 😂

@ForPearlBee if she's flat yes, I tried without the humidifier but it was much worse so I stuck it back on. Yes, I have a dust mite allergy so we use allergy pillow and duvet covers anyway, they definitely help!

round two this week with youngest DC but the suggestions for you all on here have definitely helped, I started them as soon as I heard the cough beginning and she's not been nearly as bad as my eldest was so Thankyou!

Vicks on the soles of feet, then socks. Will stop the coughing at night, trust me!

Brenna24 · 16/12/2025 20:43

Get her to sit in a steamy shower room for a bit then lie face down on her bed with the foot end propped up a bit on books so she is flat with her head lower than her feet. Put a folded towel on her back and then cup your hands slightly and is them to drum on her back from bra strap to shoulder area. . After a few minutes get her to roll one side then the other and do the same with cupped hands on her ribs. This will loosen the mucus and make it easier to cough up.
