If your radiator is below a window , what do you do ?

In the spring / summer we don't draw the curtains as our garden is long, enough for people not to see in .
Come Autumn / winter and when the heating gets turned , what do you do when you draw the curtains ?
To keep as much heat coming into the room we lift / tuck up the curtains so they rest on the window sill .
What do you do ?

I have 2 rails. Front one is the main ‘dress’ curtains. Behind that is another rail with shorter thermal curtains that sit long enough to tuck behind radiator (they live behind the dress curtains during the day).

I have blinds and use these the curtains stay open on either side of the windows for show only really.

We have curtains that tuck behind the radiator. I didn't realise people hated short curtains until I read it on MN!

They're not even short, they're window length! That is the right length for a thing that exists to cover the window. As opposed to curtains that randomly also cover a bit of blank wall or a radiator.

I am clearly destined never to be stylish!🤣

I have a radiator below my bedroom windows - I have roman blinds which stop at the window ledge.

I actually think it would look silly in our room to have short curtains despite the radiator, because directly opposite are French doors and side panels which need full length curtains. So we have full length on both sides of the room to match. I think it would look off balance to have short one side and long on the other.

🤷🏼‍♀️ I have floor length curtains at my French windows and the opposite wall has sill-length curtains above the radiator. I certainly don’t consider it ‘ridiculous’, ‘off balance’ or anything else!

Wood slat blinds cheap as chips easy to install

I’d rather they look cheap than long ones covering a radiator.

Long curtains are for long windows. They look silly if a radiator is there. And curtains can look cheap long or short. It’s the fabric that counts.

Edited

I disagree that long curtains look silly with radiators. This isn’t my house; my windows aren’t quite on the scale of the first pic, but it is a Georgian house with big windows, and if the curtains stopped above the radiators they’d look completely wrong.

I think it all depends on the individual proportions really.

Nice.
A bit different here but we still have long curtains too.

I’m violently allergic to short curtains so we moved the radiators…it helps that my son’s a gas engineer though!

MotherofPufflings · 03/12/2025 16:07

Upstairs we've got blinds and long curtains so the long curtains stay open if needed to allow heat from the radiator. Short curtains are an abomination but tucking long ones up is even worse.

Downstairs we have ended up digging up the entire ground floor to install underfloor heating, which solves the problem entirely.

FourBlackCats · 03/12/2025 16:17

Mostly Roman blinds here as I don’t like short curtains. The only room with radiator and (long) curtains is our bedroom so radiator is switched off and curtains just get closed over it.
