If someone told you that you looked 'disgustingly well'

What does that actually mean? Someone said it to me today and I honestly didn't know how to take it. I thought it as an odd turn of phrase!

It’s an unpleasant turn of phrase.

Comedycook · 28/11/2025 18:18

Odd but I'd take it to mean you look so good they are jealous

EverardDeTroyes · 28/11/2025 18:18

It means very well. It is a compliment.

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 28/11/2025 18:18

It sounds horrible but does it mean you look really well and they are envious?

This. It's a lighthearted compliment.

SeaAndStars · 28/11/2025 18:18

It's just an old fashioned saying I think. It's a compliment.

WildCherryBlossom · 28/11/2025 18:19

It is a compliment. Totally. Within that they are saying they feel a bit rough and wish they felt as glowing as you look. It is an odd turn of phrase, definitely. Nevertheless take the compliment and enjoy.

Agreed.

You look so amazing they are deeply envious.

RollerSkateLikePeggy · 28/11/2025 18:20

It's quite an old fashioned term, but just means you look really good and it's a compliment!

bingobanjo · 28/11/2025 18:21

Never said it myself but I would take it as you look so well it’s making them sick (with jealousy). It’s definitely positive and friendly.

Similar to something being ridiculously, unreasonably, insanely, shockingly, whatever good - alone it might not sound nice, but as a whole sentence it’s just boosting and emphasising the praise.

BlueSkies2026 · 28/11/2025 18:22

It's a compliment. I've been told I'm horrifically intelligent by a BF in the past.

I thought its because the other person is embarrassed about paying the compliment. Or as PPs said envious.

Coffeeblanketandabookplz · 28/11/2025 18:22

Its a compliment - like you look soooo well its sickening..but in a complimentary way not an offensive way. I would be delighted 😀

BlueSkies2026 · 28/11/2025 18:22

'Stunningly well' would sound nicer.

FigAboutTheRules · 28/11/2025 18:26

Reminds me of the term 'rude health'. But it's a great compliment.

Howtogetthrough · 28/11/2025 18:47

As others have said it's a compliment.

Phrased in a light hearted way to imply the giver of the compliment is jealous of you looking so well.

I would probably only say it to someone I knew well enough to know they would understand!
