Recommend a graphic novel for my 8 year old

My 8 year old son has been a bit of a reluctant reader but we've had a bit of a break through recently and he's finally started reading independently for pleasure. I'm obviously delighted and would like to get him something really fun to read for Christmas. He likes graphic novels / comics a lot (he does read the words as well but I think the pictures help him understand and keep his attention).

What's a good one for kids about his age? He likes Vikings, fantasy, space.. but it just needs to be a good story with good art really.

Hiya I have a reluctant reader who is also 8. She loves these graphic/ comic book series:
Dog man
The investigators
And also the tree house series ( 13 storey treehouse etc) which aren't graphic novels as such but have a lot of comedy doodles / illustrations within the text.

My boys like Bunny vs Monkey, Looshkin, Timmy Failure, the Treehouse Storey books, as well
as the Pheonix Magazine.

yes Dog Man here too.

With his taste you might want to try the Loki series, I've just ordered one for mine ( birthday next week) I'll let you know what I think/ she thinks!

Bunny Vs Monkey is a huge hit in this house. Donut squad is also well thumbed.

ladygindiva · 25/11/2025 21:17

Ah yes, second bunny Vs monkey

Greyeyesgreenlight · 25/11/2025 21:17

Any of the series from The Phoenix comic might suit him. Bunny vs Monkey, Flember, Star Cat or Corpse Talk.

We also used to like Zita the Spacegirl, Hildafolk and Cleopatra in Space.

Hercisback1 · 25/11/2025 21:17

Tom Gates isn't graphic novel but has loads of pictures and doodles too.

hexsnidgett · 25/11/2025 21:18

Came to say Bunny vs Monkey.
It's difficult avoiding inappropriate content with graphic novels.

Light fall series by Tim Probert.
Amulet series by Kazu Kibuishi gets good reviews but I haven’t read them.

Queenfreak · 25/11/2025 21:23

For christmas ive got my 8 year old "the first cat in space ate pizza", "lightfall", "beastie bros" and "you and me and the peanut butter beast"

She also likes the rune series.

Most of those are graphic novels

OneFootAfterTheOther · 25/11/2025 21:23

tom gates

He's finished all the Dog Man books and the others by the same author, but he especially loves books with quality illustrations (rather than just doodles or simple cartoons).

For an example, he's read and reread the Nordlys graphic novel by Malin Falch (highly recommend if anyone has a child with similar tastes) and the Usbourne graphic novel version of Robin Hood.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I will check them out!

How about the classics of Tin Tin or
Asterix.

MiddlingMarch · 25/11/2025 23:12

All the ones suggested above, anything from the Phoenix comic is a hit.

Max and the MidKnights is a series, I think we have books 1-3

Another recommendation for Bunny vs. Monkey here!

I’d also suggest trying the Phoenix magazine, which has a lot of different comic strips including Bunny vs Monkey. You can get a trial subscription for four weeks and see if your DS wants to continue reading it. It helped my DD get into reading at around that age.
