If my son is using my car for his driving test, what do I need?

I need to buy a rear view mirror and have L plates fitted and be in good condition, ie tyres etc.
Is there any thing else that I should consider?
Thanks

My DC both used my car for their driving test. Rear view mirror is the main thing and make sure it’s insured for them to drive.

DS failed twice in instructors car and passed in mine and with DD she only used my car and passed first time

My bonnet is not magnetic so I have attached L plate as shown. Is this ok?

Does he have a driving instructor?

Blueandred1 · 23/11/2025 15:49

Has he been practising in your car?

Yes. He's been doing lessons as well in driving instructor car but we're using mine for test as it's not in our local area.

So surely you’ve had a L plate and rear view mirror etc?

SmalltownCEO · 23/11/2025 15:55

Make sure they know how to lift the bonnet.! My son got asked to do this but didn’t have a clue. Still passed but did make him anxious from the start.

MirandaWest · 23/11/2025 23:07

My DC had both practised a lot in my car - has your DC practised in your car? I’m guessing not if you’re asking about L plates.

NancyDrooo · 23/11/2025 23:39

One of mine had to unexpectedly use my car for his test as his instructor had a family emergency. Already had the L plates as he’d driven with me before but we had to dash to Halfords for the mirror and quickly go over the list of “how to” things like popping the bonnet. He passed, phew!

Other than the mirror and plates, don’t forget his provisional licence.

Sorry I’m massively confused- how come so many of you seem to have cars without rear view mirrors?!

I totally agree! Do all cars not have rear view mirrors? Otherwise how on earth do you drive them?

Landlubber2019 · 24/11/2025 00:14

I would think the rear view mirror serves the driver not the passenger 🤔

maudelovesharold · 24/11/2025 00:23

Oh, you mean a rear view mirror for the Examiner? It all makes sense, now!

notapizzaeater · 24/11/2025 00:42

No warning lights on the dashboard ! They can’t go out in the car if there are any

So why isn’t your car already set up for a learner driver?!
