If online gift is undelivered & returned to company

What would you expect?

I ordered a small gift for delivery over 6 months ago. As I didn’t hear, I assumed the recipient got it & forgot to say, but only during a recent conversation they said “what gift?”. I followed the tracking and saw it was sent back to the online gifts company - maybe they couldn’t find the building or there was no one there to sign, it’s unclear.

What would you expect to happen next?

You should have received an automatic refund. Have you checked if you did?

No I didn’t. I emailed & they first said they’d refund me and then said they’d give me a discount for same amount against my next purchase. But I don’t have a need to buy anything from them any more. Can I insist on a refund?
