Hoping to book a long weekend in January with my friend. Obviously this is a cold time of year, is Berlin worth a visit? Or open to other recommendations! Thanks

Berlin is a fabulous city - so much to see and do, especially if you are into history and culture! I went once in January and it was bitterly cold, but I still loved it.

I'd recommend Prague or Krakow. Prague isn't full of stag parties any more.

Marrekech and Valencia

Berlin is fabulous but it will be dark and freezing. It's a weirdly windy place and so the wind chill can be pretty bad from memory. I love walking around Berlin and it wouldn't be so pleasant in January.

I'd probably be inclined to go somewhere quite small where the walks between places are smaller and you can make a virtue of the weather. Innsbruck is very cold but often really lovely and still in January, and the mountains rise up from the edge of town so you can be up in the snow in minutes, and you'll get 2-3 times more sunlight hours than Berlin according to Google. For somewhere bigger but still more compact than Berlin I really rate Vienna.

Bern and Basel are good in winter, depending on what you're interested in.

Other thoughts would be somewhere in Italy - Venice can be insanely atmospheric in winter but there is the risk of aqua alta. Rome or Florence would be a good option?

Berlin is great, but personally I would head to Budapest and hit up the hot spring baths.

Berlin is a fantastic city, but in my experience it’s cold, grey bleak & windy at the best of times. In January, it will be literally Baltic.

How about Seville, Malaga, Naples or Marrakesh instead? Great places to visit, less risk of hypothermia.

I went to Seville mid Jan and I would highly recommend.

I’ve had fantastic city breaks in Berlin, Stockholm, Prague, Paris and Budapest at that time of the year. They’ve all been cold but only coat and gloves cold, not Arctic cold.
