I’ve just treated myself to the kindle coloursoft with Ruby red leather case with n the vain hope it’ll kickstart my reading passion agin! I’ve gone for the newer coloursoft to avoid the previous issues with last years model and have to say, it’s lovely. I like it more than I thought I would

anyway, I’m also in the market for a kindle for my daughter who has one which is getting on a bit now. Would you recommend yours and what is it?

I’ve got a Kindle Paperwhite and love it for both reading in bed and outside in the sunshine.

Mine is the Paperwhite that is also waterproof, which is important to me as I can take it to the spa. I also read in bed a lot so like the light.

I think the value in Kindles is being good at a basic reading device so don't look for extra features. However, Black Friday is coming up and Amazon often have good offers so I'd be seeing which seemed best value. They also sometimes have trade in deals if you send in an old kindle.

I’m on my 3rd kindle and currently love my 7th gen paperwhite. No ads. 4gb which is only half full despite me having hundreds of books loaded. Battery isn’t as powerful as it used to be. Was thinking of upgrading but not sure….

Keep seeing a more expensive new gen kindle for sale with ‘no ads’…. I’ve obvs been under a rock for a while with my 7th gen as it don’t have ads.

I don’t need audio, internet or tons of storage…. Shall I stick with 7 or is it worth getting latest gen? I’ve heard it’s much faster…. Hmmmmmmmm!

I love my paperwhite for reading in all sorts of light conditions, plus it’s small and lightweight. Never heard of the coloursoft, off to investigate now…

Paperwhite 7the gen and virtually never use it, had it for a good few years and just can't get on with the tapping and swiping to turn pages, I much preferred my original button model. I know it sounds silly but the tapping and swiping is too big a movement because it's not very responsive and you have to tap or swipe quite hard. Whereas the button model where I rested my thumb on the button and just gave the tiniest squeeze every time was much better. Might look at what's available now to see if there's anything better.

I’ve got a paperwhite too. It’s for reading books, nothing else.

I also have a Kindle Paperwhite. No idea which gen but I bought it about 4 years ago and it’s my second. It’s great. Would replace it immediately if it died.

I’ve got the kindle scribe as I wanted it for taking notes as well, it’s bigger than I expected but I still love reading on it. I’m happy with it & find the notebooks useful too. I like that the AI on the device can read my terrible writing & still summarise my notes.

Paper white for me. The colour ones didn't have great reviews the last I read 🤔

YarraValley · 14/11/2025 07:28

I’ve got the paperwhite and I love it. Dd is getting one for her birthday but the pink and green are both out of stock and have been for a week. I’m hoping they come back in for Black Friday.

Flamingmentalcats · 14/11/2025 07:29

Paperwhite here too. More responsive than my old one, love it

whirlyhead · 14/11/2025 07:30

I have a new paperwhite and it’s great as the battery lasts forever. I had a kindle oasis before it which had the buttons but after 6 years the battery was terrible. I thought I’d hate the paperwhite without the side buttons, but it’s actually fine and I got used to it very quickly. I looked at the color ones but didn’t see the point when only book covers are in colour.

I have a paperwhite - purchased during either prime day or black Friday, and returned my old kindle which got me a voucher and a discount.

I read in bed and usually fall asleep reading so I like that it has a backlight- I didn't think I'd like it but it's subtle and warm, not like an ipad. I usually put it on dark mode (black background, white words) and turn off my light to read in bed so the bedside light no longer wakes me at 1am! But really the basic one is fine.

I miss the buttons too - I could hold with one hand and click back and forwards whereas with swiping you have to be on the "correct" side!

I have the Paperwhite 12th generation which I purchased last year in the Black Friday event. It replaced an older Paperwhite.
I also have a kindle Unlimited subscription, which gives me endless tripe books to read plus free subscription to some magazines
I love the Paperwhite, for reading in bed especially, as it auto-dims so doesn’t wake DH up if I can’t sleep.
Its not great for the magazines - it’s black & white- but I can dip in and out of the ones I like.
