Sideways move at work? Sensible or wait for promotion opportunity?

Just that really. I'm not unhappy in my current job but I'm restless and there are changes coming which I dont think I'll like. I want to stay in the same company but my team is static so it would need to be out of the team. There also isnt a natural promotion route in my team iyswim.

I've never actively looked for a promotion before and Ive only ever changed jobs when I've been unhappy. I wasnt interested in a sideways move for that reason.

There are some jobs coming up that Id like. They are with HR being assessed and they may be the grade above mine (in which case I'll apply) or my grade. If it's at my grade, there isnt a natural promotion route from that either.

My organisation has lots of movement but a lot of the roles I dont want to do.

So, would you apply for a sideways move (a change is as good as a rest) or would you hold out for a promotion which was your original plan but that will probably take a while?

Obviously there is no guarentee I'll get any job I apply for.

YANBU - apply for a sideways move. The upcoming changes may make you unhappy in which case your job search would include roles at your grade anyway.
YABU - you said you only wanted a promotion so a sideways move isnt right for you.
