Stork or Port wine stain

How do you tell the difference between a stork or a port wine stain on a newborn’s eye? Dc is 4 weeks old

I am only concerned as I’ve read a PWS on the eye can (although not always or even often) indicate an underlying disorder, whereas a stork doesn’t and would likely fade.

I think I should get this checked at DC’s 6-8 week injections, and I assume it would be slightly crazy to book an earlier appointment with the doctor to check. The 6-8 week injections will likely be at 8 weeks.

I’m assuming you had your baby in hospital? If so the midwife would’ve brought up a concern if she thought it was a PWS, I’m also assuming you’ve had your day 3/5 postpartum Midwife checks and possibly already been seen by the health visitor? again all these professionals would’ve been able to identify a PWS or point you in the direction if they had concerns. You should also have a GP check 6 - 8 post partum, they can check then.

Yes we’ve had those checks and no mention as you say so I should be able to relax. Dc had had jaundice so not sure if that sort of hid the mark but perhaps not. I’ll probably just try and wait for the 6-8 week

They’re very thorough when it comes to birthmarks, at you post partum check they should specifically ask if any new marks have developed or any changes to existing marks.
Good luck, we’ve had two babies with large stork marks to the back of their heads & one also had one on his eye.

The Birthmark Support Mark group on Facebook is really helpful.

Port wine stains are usually picked up at hospital. If it is a PWS and is over her eye they will check for glaucoma. There are also syndromes that could be linked but it would be extremely unusual unless the PWS is on her scalp and forehead (and even then it is very unlikely!)
