People who have set up an LPA

Who did you ask to be your certificate provider? I don't have much sense of how onerous this role is- I have friends who would be suitable but would like to know how much a big deal it is to ask them. Thanks!

Lasting power of attorney? It’s all done through the government website

Notagain75 · 10/11/2025 16:17

All they had to do was sign to say the know you and that no one has coerced you into setting up a LPA there is nothing else for them to do

MrsLeonFarrell · 10/11/2025 16:23

It isn't onerous. I used a friend. It's so easy to do.

Same here.

Just get someone who knows you for more than two years

They just have to witness the signature

Offleyhoo · 10/11/2025 16:52

The key thing is getting all the signatures in the right order. Critical.

TeenagersAngst · 10/11/2025 16:53

Just about to set up two of these. What is the correct order @Offleyhoo?

AlexaBeQuiet · 10/11/2025 16:54

It’s very clear on the instructions the order in which to sign

This^ follow the instructions very carefully, especially about who can witness whose signature.

As a rule you sign in the order they come in the LPA, can all be the same day.

If you can get everyone together the certificate provider can witness all the signatures.

If you need wills as well, maybe get a will and POA package done by a solicitor, it added very little to the overall cost

TeenagersAngst · 10/11/2025 18:27

Thanks @AlexaBeQuietand @Fleurchamp

In my case, everyone is dotted around the UK. Is it easy to do the signatures electronically?

My dad was quoted £1000 for a LPA alone by a solicitor. Not sure why as there’s nothing complicated about him or his affairs. Total rip off.

Not sure, I think everyone must sign the hard copy in order.

You still have to witness the person signing. So that's not going to be easy scattered around the UK. If you sign then you need people in the room with you to witness your signature.
I thought oh how easy to get people to sign but my lawyer daughter told me this wasn't the case.

Same here. A friend, who is just to make sure you aren't being coerced and you know what you're doing.

The hardest part for me was ensuring the order of signatories was correct.

No connection to either beyond investigating them when I was doing mine, but both these places are reputable and do combined Will/LPA for reasonable fees:

You can pay someone if you like but we just downloaded and printed off the forms and sent them off. It was really easy and when we mucked up a page we just reprinted it!
