What should we do for a weekend in Munich in December?

We're flying out on a Friday night and coming home Sunday night. Me, DH and two DC (8 and 11). The main reason we're going is to go to the Christmas Market at Marienplatz and just to have a bit of time away together (we don't go away a lot).

What else should we do while we're there?

Also, for anyone who has been before, I read that a lot of things in Germany are closed on Sundays. Would this be the case for a city like Munich so close to Christmas?

If it's dry, we'll be fairly happy just exploring, finding a park or two etc for a while. If it's pouring rain though, I have no idea what we'll do so all suggestions welcome!

Go swimming at Thermea Erding. It’s very fun and warm. The science Museum is good.

There are loads of Christmas markets in Munich. There is a medieval themed one somewhere

Beyond that there is loads to see. The Olympic tower, Palaces, Museums and Art Galleries. Hofbrauhof for a taste of traditional food and beer halls. Walk in the Englischer Garten. Most shops are closed on Sunday but loads to do that is open

We were in Munich last December. There was some weird parade, the markets of course, Olympic stadium, BMW factory and best of all… we walked to find the original site of Willy Wonka’s factory from the movie. The very same gateposts and outbuilding are still there!

If you are around on the 14th, there is a Krampuslauf through the city! Great fun! Museums and galleries are all open on Sunday, just not normal shops (unless at a station or airport). What kind of things are you and the kids interested in?

Yes we will be there then. This sounds great!

I've only been to Munich once before on a school trip (History teacher) and I'd be happy to go to some museums and emwander round looking at buildings. Kids are very active though so would get bored of that quite quickly. I'm going to have a look at interesting parks/outside spaces we can explore ut wondering what other indoor options there are just in case of bad weather.

Medieval Christmas Market sounds just my style! Thanks for the recommendations.
