How many times a day do you feed your cat?

If you have a cat, how many times a day do you feed them and at what times? Also how much food do you give at each meal?

I feel like I’m not getting this right. I think I feed them too much but they still always mither me for food as if they’re starving! Just curious about what other cats get

We have 5 cats.
They get a pouch of Felix three times a day each (8am, 3pm, 9pm) and get a bowl of biscuits between them which gets topped up once a day.
All of them are a perfect weight (varying between 3.8 and 4.6kg).

I feed mine a pouch of wet food twice a day and give dry food between if she’s asking for food.
She pretty much pesters DH for food every time he’s in the kitchen though ( she has worked out who is most likely to cave in), I don’t think she’s hungry just greedy, fairly normal for cats. She doesn’t always eat all her food either and is a healthy weight (almost overweight!)

Apparently not enough.

Our big lad is on a 3 pouch diet - we've got a notice board as he's frequently falling over with starvation. Fortunately for him we've also got a fussy 19 year old girl who is skin and bone despite normal thyroid results always asks for food and then decides she doesn't like it, so he eats a lot of leftovers too. Still not enough for him.

Depends on the cat. We had to put them on chip based feeders.

one we add dry food whenever the bowl is getting low. She could eat and eat and would never gain weight. Often 2+ times a day. Wet no more than once a day.

one we fill the bowl about once a day.

one gets a tiny measured scoop of kibble plus her allocation of wet food mixed with an absolutely undetectable medication. She typically refuses to eat either despite being hungry and stares forlornly at the same exact food in the other cat bowls.

Half a little can (85g) of wet food and 12g of biscuits in the morning.

Same again late afternoon so overall 85g of wet and 24g of dry.

It doesn't look like much and he definitely would love to have more, but it's been carefully worked out through monitoring his weight. More and he starts getting fat and I won't let him get fat if I can help it!

He has Wellness Core wet food and Royal Canin dry. He's 5 kg which is a healthy weight for him.

Not enough, according to my cat

Prettygreeneyes43 · 31/10/2025 12:39

My cat must be very greedy then. She normally has 2 pouches for breakfast (3 today she was very insistent on that 3rd one). And 1-2 pouches for dinner. She won’t touch biscuits though she’s very fussy. Treats if we get them in. Half a pouch pft ! No way!

Mines gets half a pouch in the morning. Biscuits throughout the day & half a pouch in the evening. Then biscuits throughout the night.

I'm currently catsitting for Charlie the Rescue Cat. The above is what he gets, according to his owner's instructions.

If he didn't hate me so much, he'd also get treats but running away makes this tricky, however many Tasty Treats get left around the house by his owner.

I've got 1 tiny female cat and 1 very large as half Maine Coon male. Female has 1/2 of an 85g tin of Republic of Cats 9am morning and the other half 9.30pm plus 2 tablespoons of their kibble at lunchtime. Large cat has 1 85g tin of Republic of Cats 9am morning plus 1 Felix sachets at the same time, kibble for lunch and 2 Felix sachets at 9.30pm. plus 2 or 3 times a week I swap their kibble for a large chicken breast they share and I chop up for them. Since moving them over to Republic of Cats tins their coats have become much glossier and their eyes brighter. They have a free trial box offer ATM.

Mine gets a pouch in the morning with half a lickelix mixed in as she’s on urinary food and isn’t that keen without the lickelix, same in the evening and has biscuits down all the time but she has hardly any, Dreamies once or twice a day depending on how loud she shouts for them.
I think it’s perfect but that’s not what she thinks!

MrsScrubbingbrush · 31/10/2025 12:51

My two are only 8 months old. They’re not interested in food first thing as all they want to do is be let outside and explore. They get 1 tin of Untamed between them at about 10 which usually gets their back in the house plus Royal Cannin kitten biscuits to graze on. Then the same again mid afternoon. Possibly a third tin between at bedtime if they’re hungry. Plus the odd few Dreamies if I can’t get them back in (the old trick of rattling the tin usually makes them come running) This is Mango and Fig after a hard day’s exploring

Ours have anywhere between 1 pouch a day (summer) and 5 pouches a day (autumn) but the bigger one is 3.5kg and the one that miaows loudest and longest for food is about 2.8kg, so theyre both pretty small. The smaller one is always rushing about, the larger one spends most of the time that he isn't eating, sleeping ...although he has a funny 5 minutes twice a day when he attacks the rug in the lounge.

idrinkandiknowthings · 31/10/2025 13:37

On demand, plus chicken, beef, ham and treats 😅

isitmyturn · 31/10/2025 13:56

15 year old thin cat.
He gets a bowl of biscuits to graze on. One pouch of wet morning and evening and another in bits during the day when he mithers me.

FannyCradocksDoughnut · 31/10/2025 14:05

For about the first 10yrs he had the cheaper supermarket biscuits (bright yellow bag!) Constantly topped up bowl. Never overate, kept to a perfect weight! Then he started to get some digestive issues mainly vomiting and lot!
Switched to Hill's on the advice of the vet but he's only allowed 65g per day. Unfortunately he's now obsessed with food, often begging. Luckily vomiting is a rare occurrence now, he's given small amounts through the day, can be quite labour intensive 🙄

Thank you, I think so too 😻

Crunchymum · 31/10/2025 15:23

x1 85g pouch each (half morning and half evening)
x1 tin to share for lunch
Dry food is topped up every night before bed and lasts 24h.

Occasional licky lix / dreamies. And obviously they get a portion of turkey at Christmas!

One cat is very large (long and fat) but vet wants him to lose weight. He's also on a special diet for recurrent cystitis.

Other cat is also a big boy but smaller and slimmer than the other one. This cat loves a bit of human food. His faves are Greek yogurt, avocado and of hummus!! Have to keep him out of the room when I prepare packed lunches!!

Both mither for food at feeding time (I swear they know within a 10 minute window when its feeding time - even when the clocks change) but they then piss off for their 8 hours naps 🤣

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 31/10/2025 15:27

Never. (According to the cat)
Two pouches a day. A handful of biscuits if he's desperately starving at lunch. Dreamies from whichever sucker falls for his acting.
