It does for me - just soothing

I also do salt water gargle

Maddy70 · 30/10/2025 12:59

Yes but add a splash of cider vinegar. Works wonders!

Honey is one of the only things that does suppress coughing. Short of codeine!

Put some cloves in as well (and whiskey).

Whiskey and honey works better

BaronessBomburst · 30/10/2025 13:08

Yes. The honey coats the throat, soothing it, as well as having antibacterial properties.

Apparently if a child swallows button batteries you should keep feeding them spoonfuls of honey until you get them to hospital as the honey will coat them and reduce internal burns. I read it on the internet though so may not be true.

Not hot though, warm. Too hot and it will irritate your throat.

Eggybreadwithnuts · 30/10/2025 13:21

Will give it a go...got flu on day 5 and although slighly feeling abit better, cough is kicking in which is making throat hurt.

Taking meds but want some other help and has heard about honey and lemon. Although I hate honey...but will give it a go.

So say in a mug how much honey amd lemon?

Stud a fat slice of lemon with cloves. Steep in the hot water. Wait a bit. Dissolve a tablespoon of honey in it, add juice of half a lemon at the end. (And a splash of whiskey).

Just drinking anything will help a cough and a sore throat. Honey is soothing but if you are not keen, how about herbal tea? Also keeping your liquid intake up is good if you have flu. Lemon = vit C but again, if not a fan, any drink is good. Ideally not caffeine tho.

Really works wonders in my house. Very soothing.

magicstar1 · 30/10/2025 13:26

It does for me. I put a teaspoon or two of honey in a cup (it really depends on the size of the cup), then squeeze some lemon in until I like the taste. I alternate with oranges too and it's lovely.
At night I put it into my Contigo travel mug so if I wake up I have a hot drink beside me.

If you have a tickly cough at night, I find that Vicks on the feet always helps. It might sound like an old wives tale, but rub it on the soles of your feet, and put a pair of socks on.

Peonies12 · 30/10/2025 13:27

Definitely helps! And add some root ginger to. And gargle with salt water

ImFineItsAllFine · 30/10/2025 13:27

I find it helps a cough but not for very long.

I wish you could still get Pholcodine.

Vodkamartini3olives · 30/10/2025 13:28

I drink lemon & honey everyday it soothes everything. I like to add cinnamon and ginger. Even better with the occasional tot of whiskey.

EvelynBeatrice · 30/10/2025 13:28

I can’t immediately find it but there are reputable studies that show that hot lemon and honey outperform over the counter cough medicines.

Eggybreadwithnuts · 30/10/2025 15:31

Right sold! Will give it a go, Ive also got some fresh ginger so will pop a slice of that in. Hubby just come home from work...been sick, shivery now in bed so 2 of us down!!!!
