Does anyone else count everything?

Canopop · 29/10/2025 20:03

I count everything, not in seconds or anything meaningful just arbitrary counting. Just caught myself counting while I’m filling my mug from the kettle 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 I know it always takes 7 to fill my green mugs … is this normal do other people do this? It doesn’t impact my life remotely and I’m very chill person nice job lovely family etc no trauma… just thought maybe it’s not completely normal to count everything but maybe it is?

I do this and I also try to make any long numbers I see into dates and get frustrated if I can't 😂 (e.g 150922 would be ok but 184749 wouldn't). Ah typing that has made me feel more odd

So glad I’ve found a lot of my people here 😁 I brush my teeth in sets of 8 counts on each quadrant, and repeat… surely even those who aren’t counters count a BIT when they brush teeth?! Right?

Nope. I actually purchased a toothbrush that counts for me. 4 bursts of 30 seconds for 4 sections of your mouth. And I still don't follow it, just haphazardly brush all over as it buzzes and stops.

Tryingmybest100 · 29/10/2025 21:08

My DH does this constantly - also counts cars when driving, people on stage when watching something at the theatre, counts up the numbers on numberplates etc. He has ADHD & thinks its part of how he manages his constant overthinking as when he's doing this he is not overthinking anything else!

hidinginthebathroomagain · 29/10/2025 21:16

I do this for loads of things.

Headabovetheparapets · 29/10/2025 21:17

Yes I do🤣🤣 sometimes it’s a timing or remembering thing, like 6 ingredients to get from the cupboard or 3 tasks to do or like @Canopop counts to fill a dish or cup, but often it’s just the comfort of the numbers. 🤷‍♀️

Teathecolourofcreosote · 29/10/2025 21:20

Worse, I count in elephants.

One elephant, two elephant etc.

I think I was once told this is the way to measure seconds so that's how I mentally time things.

haveyouopenedyourbowelstoday · 29/10/2025 21:25

I’m a counter! Steps, breathing, you name it.

pambeesleyhalpert · 29/10/2025 21:28

Yeah I did but I don’t really notice I’m doing it i til I get to about 12!

SabbatWheel · 29/10/2025 21:30

I count a lot.
Prefer odd numbers, especially the numbers 3 and 13.
If I’m struggling to get to sleep I count to 100 as fast as I can in my head, and count how many times I can do this. I’m usually asleep before 12 or 13 times.

OnlyOnAFriday · 29/10/2025 21:33

I count “points” on physical items, especially corners. And I will draw a line with my eyes while in do it, often includes a diagonal pattern and then I have to reverse it. So doors , especially ones with panels, windows, cars, number plates, posters.

Iwontlethtesungodownonme · 29/10/2025 21:35

I count.
Emptying and filling dishwasher, count each item.
Count filling up my cup, takes 8 counts.
Count while running, going up and down stairs, cleaning teeth, ironing.
Count the number of things I need to do when I get out of the shower before I can leave the bathroom.
And many more things.

wendywoopywoo222 · 29/10/2025 21:39

I count stairs every time I go up and down. Home has 13 as do most peoples houses, work has 14 which is better as I don’t like odd numbers.

I often count the stops when I’m in a walk, count to 500 and then start again. I can’t have a conversation when I’m doing this or stop to talk to anyone. I have car speakers, television etc on even numbers.

if someone on the tele says a number that sticks in my mind I count on my fingers so ten at a time over and over until I hit the number on my last finger.
In churches I count the number of green panes in stained glass windows.

I also randomly count other things, could be trees on a road, or how many blue cars I see.
I find it quite exhausting and frustrating that I can’t stop.

ContentedAlpaca · 29/10/2025 21:40

I do lots of counting and counting of things as well..I can usually tell you how many ceiling tiles there are in a room.

morbidcuriosity · 29/10/2025 21:40

ha, i count steps.. I live on the 3rd floor and each floor up is 2 sets of 7 steps..

i count to 7 each time though, not all of them together!

herewegoagain432 · 29/10/2025 21:43

Yes I do. When i am washing hands i do 100 scrubs and when i am tidying something I count from 100-1 and when i get to
1 I stop.
Random or what

I do this too!! I'll stare at the floor and imagine lines from the corners of furniture to another corner, or windows like you do. I don't count them as such, just see lines

Also the odd numbers thing, can't stand them. Radio or tv volume is always on an even number, unless it's a multiple of 5 and then it seems to be ok 😂

ZiggyZowie · 29/10/2025 21:50

I count patterns on wallpaper or on bedding, anywhere that has a pattern I count it
when filling the car with petrol it's got to be £60.00 exactly, or £66.66 for example .
I've got a floral blouse and I count how many red flowers, how many blue etc.
Can't stop it and it's annoying but I am Nd

Alisonjayne8 · 29/10/2025 21:51

I'm fascinated by your replies. I don't count anything, except if it needed to be counted, like giving someone change etc. I also don't know anyone else that counts, but then again, maybe they wouldn't tell me!

Bubbles332 · 29/10/2025 21:54

I do it- I do have OCD which I got treatment for when it was ruining my life years and years ago, but the counting thing is fairly benign and stuck around. Now I have a toddler I get to do it out loud for things like stairs (count forwards on the way up and backwards on the way down) and it helps with his maths.
Top tip: link it up to your pelvic floor exercises. I have to go to women’s health physio after giving birth and I’m her star pupil.

caniaffordit · 29/10/2025 21:55

Yes I do

Campbellcarrotsoup · 29/10/2025 22:18

Am I the only one that loves odd numbers? I have to set alarms on my phone for odd minutes. But 5 doesn't count as a proper odd number that would be cheating!
. I don't count things all that much but I do Count by squeezing different parts of my body sometimes fingers and
Toes, sometimes buttucks and shoulders to count to 100 in 4s and 3s. But then I have reverse the order as well to make it symmetrical if i start with the left side i have to repeat but start wigh my right side.. Obviously I can't tell anyone this in real life but it does pass the time whilst bored or nervous

distractdistract · 29/10/2025 22:20

This is a fascinating thread and I think I’ve found my people!

I count. I like even numbers. As a child I counted but also had to touch items a number of times, like if I switched on a light I had to touch the light switch 4 times, then it became I had to touch it 8 times then it escalated to 16 times. I was scared if I didn’t that something awful would happen, like a parent dying. I know I was less than 12 years old based on the house we were living in but even at that age I realised it was spoiling my life and I made myself stop.

I still count but have to keep myself in check that I don’t start obsessing.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 29/10/2025 22:34

Am I the only one that loves odd numbers?

There seem to be a few others on the thread.

Although odd numbers are obviously just wrong

Thecarstairsitreallyhurtsmegirl · 29/10/2025 22:37

Only when extreme anxiety hits along with the constant up down and unable to sit still.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 29/10/2025 22:45

ooooh yes I often do this. Also sometimes when walking the dog I’ll count and just keep going until first poo stop and see how far we get 😄
also when in traffic I will add up the numbers on car reg in front then divide that number by the total number of digits then take them of it’s a two digit answer I’ll subtract big one from little one.

i sound so weird 😳
