eBay now asking for NI number and probably Vinted too

I have received a message from eBay because I have sold over 30 items in the last year.

These are my personal items and the total value is only £500 but I have to give my NI number as I have sold over 30 items, although I can sell personal items to the value of £1000 without any tax obligation.

I thought I would give a heads up as if you sell low value items you will soon pass the 30 limit.

If you are selling only personal items you can sell as many as you like with no tax implications

FuglyBitch · 29/10/2025 19:21

Are you sure it isn’t a scam?

Agree. Don't give them your NI number.

Sounds like a scam definitely!

BedlingtonFloof · 29/10/2025 19:37

It’s not a scam. If you sell more than 30 items, you now need to provide your NI number.

Teacup40 · 29/10/2025 19:47

It's not a scam. I had to do the same thing a few months ago!

I am afraid they will block your account then

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 29/10/2025 20:15

They have to report to HMRC and are protecting themselves.

LuckyNumberFive · 29/10/2025 20:17

It isn't a scam. They're now reporting this information to HMRC directly. If you're selling your personal items you're fine, but all the info is shared just the same. You can choose not to provide the info, but then your profile will be shut down. Same for Vinted.

Classiccar1 · 29/10/2025 20:22

As other people have said it is not a scam and if you don't provide the information they are asking for they will restrict your account.
You can still sell your own items without owing tax but you will still have to give your NI number.
