First gaming console for 9 year old- what would you go for?

We are intending to get some form of console for DS who turns 9 in a few weeks. Neither DH or I were interested in gaming and we are rather clueless! We have soon to be 9 year old DS and 11 year old DD. DD isn’t fussed with gaming but would play with DS.

DS has used his childminder’s switch for a couple of years, but beyond that has no real experience using a PlayStation etc. I’d rather buy something that would see him into his teen years. Most of his friends have the switch, but are they likely to grow out of this as teenagers?

Any recommendations for what you’d get for a 9 year old would be appreciated.

Thanks.

We went with a Switch at that age. Didn’t move to an Xbox until well into teens. Still gets played now, 8 years later.

A switch would be good the new switch 2 came out in June.

Thank you, that is really helpful.

Honestly I would resist gaming consoles for as long as possible. They seem to consume kids’ lives. Absolutely no need in primary school

They likely will grow out of the switch as teenagers but there’s a good chance by the time your DS is a teenager they’ll be a new PlayStation and Xbox out anyway so I don’t think either one will be an investment for the future. Just go with what you think he’ll enjoy now rather than planning too far ahead.
