Is anyone a phlebotomist that can help with a question about bloods ?

[Bloodtesting]

How many blood bottles would be needed for the following tests :
FBC
renal profile
liver function
full thyroid panel
LH
FSH
Oestrogen
calcium
progesterone
SHBG
prolactin
testosterone

Also would an hba1c test come under FBC or any of the other tests above ?

Only two bottles - gold and purple. HBA1c just needs to be added to the form if not already printed on there.

Thankyou it’s just strange as hba1c wasn’t on the list yet that’s all I’ve been given the result for and they only took 1 bottle ? I was expecting it to be more and did ask I was worried there had been a mistake

Depends on the hospital. We would need a separate red bottle for Hba1c. We don’t have gold bottles. Would use brown for the other tests.

Our lab won’t do more than 4 tests per bottle so we’d need at least 2 or 3 gold and a purple. I think our Hba1c is a grey bottle too (or possibly that’s just glucose, I can’t remember)

I think perhaps they made a mistake then which is odd as I asked before the blood was taken was it a lot of bottles for all the various things and was told just 1??

Any chance they have mixed up your bottles with someone else’s ( ie printed out someone else’s details for the bottle labels and the form- did they definitely check your name/ DOB as they labelled the bottles?)
Are the remainder of the results still in progress/ not been released to you yet? Although to be fair many of those would be back within a few hours usually.

it is easy to add tests onto samples IF the correct bottles were used, even if not on the original request.
As an anaesthetist we often request the first four tests, never the rest. The first four tests alone would need two different bottles.

Would be worth letting whoever requested the bloods know only one bottle was taken as that does sound like an error somewhere.

As soon as I walked in I was asked to confirm date of birth and address, I even asked was it a lot of bottles as there were a lot of tests to be done so I’m really confused. In the past the thyroid ones have always been back the same day so I did think it was odd they hadn’t come through then Ive only had results for a test that wasn’t on the form ?! Ill have to give them a call on Monday it’s just really frustrating as some needed to be on a specific cycle day
