I used to think I was a royalist

I used to think I was a royalist. Now I realise I probably just liked QE2.

I don't mind the main characters, but actually I probably wouldn't mind if we had the Blairs as president etc, I'm so over the squabbling.

But they were always like you are seeing. It's just that now the covers are coming off and people are reporting more. The days of not reporting news about them eg Edward VIII and his divorcee lounging in Europe are gone. Less deference to them but the Monarchy still pulls a lot of strings in Government and Diplomatic circles

The queen protected her sexual predator son. She deserves no respect.

HotTiredDog · 21/10/2025 19:33

OP, I think I share your opinion. We only saw what they wanted us to see - as PP says, the covers are coming off.
I don’t believe that QE saw a fraction of the extent of PA’s behaviour, even such a doting mother couldn’t have countenanced supporting that.

They can all just quietly fade away from the limelight as far as I’m concerned, provided the historical tourism benefits continue of course!

I've actually started to feel a little less fond of the queen since the reported money she paid out for the cover up of Andrew. I have little time for Charles.

As time has gone on I think it has become more apparent how bizarre a set-up it is. It made more sense in history but I don't think the public has an appetite to be preached to any more on the way we should be living.

Mollydoggerson · 21/10/2025 23:15

Andrew lost his virginity with an adult prostitute paid for by an adult friend, when Andrew was 11. He is an abuse victim.

Fergie s mother was decapitated in a road traffic accident and he SIL died in an rta, her parents were swingers

All the spares are collateral damage, and perpetuate that damage.

I’m happy to have the immediate principal players - Charles, William and Kate and kids. They are born into this weird combination of job, duty, responsibility, history, expectation, formality, celebrity status and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

I’d cut off the rest though.

Andrew, Fergie, Harry and Meghan should just go and live a quiet life somewhere. I don’t know how much money they’ve got but I’ll bet it’s more than the rest of us - surely it’s enough.

Apparently Prince Edward also has a mansion somewhere on the Windsor estate, for which he pays a peppercorn rent.

So much for a slimmed down monarchy 🙄

Screamingabdabz · 21/10/2025 23:35

I agree op. I was a staunch royalist and still think they have their use in terms of soft power but Charlie and Will better well up their game massively over the next year or so. They need to stop all that outrageous Duchy tax on public services and get out doing some good in world - actually stand for something beyond privilege!

freedo · 21/10/2025 23:43

It's incredibly outdated & I don't understand what impact they actually have.
