Give me your COLD remedies

I've had cold symptoms since Tuesday. Nose is red and sore with wiping.
Ribs ache from the coughing. Headache.
Have been taking paracetamol every 4 hours during the day.
Plenty of fluids and hot drinks.
Got Vicks on my chest. Also have tried the inhalation with steam.

Has anyone got any good ideas to get rid of it.
I go abroad in less than 10 days.

I’ve got the spray called First Defence (I think). Seems to work x

Imfat · 19/10/2025 16:15

That only works at the start of a cold. I've had it since Tuesday.
But thanks for the suggestion

High dose Vitamin C, zinc and vitamin D, the holy trinity for immune support.
I also take echinacea at the first symptoms, you might be too late for that now.

I also make a big colourful salad oor soup with fresh herbs: chop up carrot, red onion, beetroot, red and orange peppers, chili, tomatoes, spinach, radish, kale etcb dressed with vinegar, lemon, honey and fresh thyme and rosemary.

Also rest, warm bath with magnesium, gargling salt water for a sore throat, steam inhalation for a blocked nose or sinus pain.

It probably all sounds kooky but I like the holistic approach and it seems to work.

I would add to try to rest and sleep as much as you can but if you have a trip looming up within 10 days I don't think you'll be able to get much rest.

anamo · 19/10/2025 16:35

Mega hot whisky made with a Lemsip. It might not be approved by many, and it might not cure you, but you'll feel fab and get a great sleep. 😊

Exputex cough syrup is great. It works getting the horrible phegmy cough sorted.

Mumdiva99 · 19/10/2025 16:36

If you have a bad headache too do you think it might be the new covid variation? Which maybe takes a little longer to get over.
I came down with a cold yesterday and have taken a cocktail of tablets given to me by my partner which include lysine, garlic oil, vit c etc
I think lemon and honey (with a splash of whisky once you are on the mend) can't be beaten.

Another vote for First Defence. As soon as I have an inkling of having a cold coming - for me it's a scratchy throat - I use First Defence a few times a day and I gargle with Corsodyl morning, afternoon and evening. I swear since I have been doing this (for 3/4 years) a cold has never turned into flu or anything resembling a bad cold. May just be I have lucky immunity but it works for me.

Imfat · 19/10/2025 16:55

Thank you for the suggestions.
I had my COVID vaccine in August (ex cancer patient)
Flu vaccine in September.
Pneumonia at the beginning of October.
Even had the first shingles vaccine.

Nearly raw garlic and onions in food i have it in pasta

LizzyEm · 19/10/2025 17:22

Chicken soup, with the bones in, loads of rosemary and thyme, onions, garlic, ginger. I make it at the first hint of getting ill and then I dont come down with whatever it is.

Or a nice spicy curry, as hot as you can have, ask for extra garlic, onion, ginger. I like to feel it in my chest, going down.

Milliemoons · 19/10/2025 17:23

Very spicy food has been the only thing which has worked for me.

You can't get rid of a cold. All you can do is try and ease symptoms to cope better. You are doing the right thing though staying hydrated and resting. Vicks doesn't actually do anything, though. You can't build immunity from colds and you can't fight them with vitamins. In fact, there is evidence many vitamins may be harmful.

Middlemarch123 · 19/10/2025 19:57

Don’t laugh OP, but my dear departed granny used to swear by putting Vicks on the soles of your feet and a thick pair of socks on when you sleep. It works for me. I take a soluble flu remedy with a decongestant in it and a soluble vit c tablet mixed in, in hot water too. Hope you feel better soon.

BlueWorkDay · 19/10/2025 20:48

Sleep.

"Tea" made with grated fresh turmeric, ginger, lemon, and honey.

More sleep.

Salt water nasal spray.

But mainly sleep.

BoarBrush · 19/10/2025 21:27

Codeine before bed if your coughs keeping you up. Olbas oil bubble bath. And spit the gunk out if your bringing up phlegm.
