What can I feed my car spider?

There’s a spider in my car. He’s a cute little fella about 1 - 2 cm in size but I’m worried he’s not going to get enough flies or bugs to eat. Occasionally the odd one comes in the car but I’ve never noticed one in his web (which is sadly not looking as great as it did). As soon as the car stops he runs into his hiding space so I can’t move him out of the car.

Do any spider experts know if I can leave crumbs of anything for him or do they only eat bugs?

Feel so sad at the thought of little Steve being hungry.

Am interested as I have a car spider too. I have the most amazingly elaborate 3d web on the dashboard which is a work of art.

It's Steve's responsibility to find his own food. He probably came there specially for the car bugs.

The spiders to worry about are the ones that make their webs in the space between the car door and the wing mirror, which get trashed every time you drive.

I have a moderate spider phobia but OP you make your spider sound so cute!

I have a car spider. It's perfectly capable of finding it's own food. If it wasn't finding enough, it would leave. My car spider found their own way in and would find the way out again if it didn't like it.

There was rumour on my school bus back in the day that there was a spider the size of a cat in the corner of our local pub because the washing up team used to give it left over bits of steak 😂

Aww, you sound really fond of your little car spider OP. How kind to want to feed it. There's a possibility that Steve will ride out the cooler winter months in a state of hibernation, likely in an area well hidden within your car. If it survives, it will be back to eating gnats, mosquitoes, flies, once again come spring,
Spiders are also known for eating bedbugs and fleas, so they are useful little things.

My daughter has a dainty little spider friend who come onto her table every night around 9, when she is revising. She watches DD for a while and goes back to where she came from.

I have a tiny little 5mm car spider on the top my dashboard, it’s one of those dashboards that slopes towards the windscreen and is really hard to reach the front of iyswim.
It pops out for a little stroll every time I get in to drive somewhere as if to say… ooh where are we going?

It should be fine as I do quite a lot of runs to the tip with garden waste and my car is a mess, so I’m sure s/hes doing a good job and has plenty to eat.

I love this post ❤️!!!

I worry about water for mine, so I sometimes scatter a few drops from my water bottle in to the dashboard.

MajorMerrick · 18/10/2025 13:35

My car spider has grown bigger over the summer, so he’s getting food somewhere, bless him. My wing mirror spiders are doing great, although I worry about the one who dropped off at my mums house, he’ll have no idea where he is.

I have found my people 💕 🕷

We took our outside mirror spider on holiday with us this year when we drove to Spain. He then came home with us.

You can feed him a fresh dead fly. Carefully drop it into the web and then gently blow on it. The movement will make him think it’s alive and he will come and get it. I had my own car Steve.

I miss my wing mirror spider. He came out on the motorway one day and blew away, silly little chap. I hope he landed somewhere safely.

Hope you made sure he had all his rabies documentation. <stern face>

Awwww, ‘little Steve’ 🥹. My car spiders usually live on the wing mirror so food probably isn’t an issue (although it’s ’fast good’ if the car’s moving lols).

I’m not sure the pet spider habitat shows up very well in the photo

I have a mirror spider, sometimes she peaks over the top at me when I get in the car! I also have a larger spider in my kitchen who is allowed to stay as its getting cold outside. I love spiders!
