Are you a witch?

Don’t laugh but am going on a witchcraft course tomorrow and haven’t told my husband! I’ve always been aware of strong intuition and have strong pulls to trees, shells & pebbles on the beach, the ocean, mushrooms, fairies etc. Am 50 and reinventing myself. Have you ever been on a witchcraft course? Do you believe it exists? Excited and a little bit scared!! 😱

No, but I loved reading, "Weyward" by Emilia Hart

AnnaBegins · 18/10/2025 22:25

No. But I went to an interesting event last week that talked about witch = woman, because the word witch was only used to bring down powerful or influential women. Which was an interesting take!

RoundandSad · 18/10/2025 22:25

I have A colleague who says she is

Honestly, I don't understand it. Nothing you put in your post says witch unless you are going to do magic spells with mushrooms and seashells

Can you magic my house clean please?

What does it mean these days?

I am a witch and was very carefully vetted before I was accepted for (years of ) training, and before I was initiated. My tradition doesn't advertise, doesn't offer training to paying customers and doesn't allow non initiates into our circles.

Having said that, I practised witchcraft as a solo/hedgewitch for years before that, from instinct and from reading some decent books.
There are many that I wouldn't recommend.
I would recommend Marianne Green, Rae Beth and Scott Cunningham's books for beginners.

I know a few witches who offer courses in basic principles and techniques; some are reputable and some definitely aren't. You have no way of knowing, other than word of mouth. Have a look at advice online about red flags to look out for.

Hope you find your path.

As a witch, what do you actually ‘do’ and what does the training entail?

RoundandSad · 18/10/2025 23:02

@GingerPaste I wonder this too

RoundandSad · 18/10/2025 23:03

we have local covens too by the way

And apparently quite a lot of the women I meet at the local business networking our members. Well, that's what I've been told. I don't know 100% if it's true.

ninjahamster · 18/10/2025 23:05

Not a witch but a few years ago I started hearing and seeing angels. I was referred to the MH team and they sectioned me several times and put me on antipsychotics then they went.
I got a new psychiatrist who said I wasn’t psychotic and took me off the medication and now the angels are with me constantly.
I realise I have been chosen. I imagine it’s the same feeling for a witch, that awareness of being special.

DarkForces · 18/10/2025 23:07

I am a woman in my mid 40s and have the power to turn myself invisible with a frumpy cardigan. That's pretty witchy.

makesandbakes · 18/10/2025 23:10

My inlaws are Wiccan witches. They discovered it at around your age too, I believe. It started with them going to several spiritualist churches until they found their coven. They keep pretty quiet about their beliefs. I know they celebrate the solstice, follow lunar calendar etc. They have an altar somewhere but ive never asked to see it (think it's just a quiet space for offerings, not like a big display!)

MIL does have an ominous looking spice wrack in the living room which she uses for spells but I dont know what spells she does exactly. She collects a lot of birds skulls. I read a book once to get a better understanding of their way of life. It was called "Wicca: A modern guide to witchcraft and magick" by Harmoney Nice. I found it really interesting. I'd definitely recommend it if you would like to know more on the subject.

Following through pure interest

stillyawning · 18/10/2025 23:17

I suspect my neighbours think I'm a witch. 😂Seriously though, approach with caution. You don't need classes and other people to build up your own spiritual approach to the world.

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 18/10/2025 23:28

No, personally I don’t believe in anything like that. Anything that can’t be explained scientifically isn’t for me.

LadyDarcy80s · 17/10/2025 23:27

I’ve no real experience but I find it fascinating. I seem to have some physic abilities and in the last few years have got good at manifesting. Where did you hear about this class, I’d be interested to give it a go.

"Physic" is an old-fashioned term for medicine.

BrillantBriony · 18/10/2025 23:55

Not a witch but I use herbs, and make my own potions. Most recently I’ve been out foraging elderberries which I made into a tincture, I recently cut down my lavender and made hydrosol, I make cough sweets with young pine needles etc…

RightOnTheEdge · 19/10/2025 00:07

No, but I wish I was. I'd love to be like Agatha Harkness or Manon Blackbeak.
I love witches.

ginasevern · 18/10/2025 18:06

Me too.

Can you tell me more so I don’t repeat it? X

Wow that must have been terrifying. Am glad you got another doctor who understood. Xxxx

Hi all I’ve come back this evening and it was a great introduction day. There was a lot to take in and the group was liberal and welcoming. I expected more feminine energy as there was a male group leader but he was a character and very knowledgeable. I’m doing more research before I write an essay and a few more to prove that I am serious about the practice. It’s not expensive to join the coven and it seems sociable and like a family exploring the many practices at your own pace. Wish me luck!! 🤗

Irritatedandsad · 19/10/2025 01:31

I was into witchraft and wicca for a bit. I have books, and subscribed to a magazine.
I stopped short at joining a coven.
It was a long time ago and an interesting hobby, I love the old pagan religions. They make more sense to me.
I think modern druids are weird though.
It's a fun hobby.

Pretty sure my neighbour has a broomstick if that counts?
