7 year old leg pain and unexplained bruising

I'm obviously thinking the worst so I thought it best to post here in case the story rings bells with anyone.
I took my 7 year old DS to the gp today for leg pain. It starts in the knee and radiates down. Only on one leg. Both day and night time. Ongoing for months and put down to growing pain but the pain is waking him at night now and he's struggling to walk up the stairs and has a slight limp.
Gp did in depth assessment and found two lumps on his shins with bruising and bruising around the knee. Looking back at pictures the bruises have been there for months.
Ds is lathargic and agitated in mood recently, some reduced appetite but don't know if I'm just looking to far into it now.
Gp has referred for x-ray and a blood test. What's made me worry is the gp rang at lunchtime to say the GPs in the practice had discussed it over lunch and felt they couldn't wait for BT from the children's hospital so would do them at the surgery tomorrow. What on earth does that mean?! I'm beside myself with worry that this is something sinister.
Please tell me someone's been there and it's just something normal?

I’m a physio. Night pain and one sided pain in a child is always taken seriously as a “red flag” so you are doing the right thing. An xray will show what it is and then if treatment is needed it will get sorted. The medics will want to rule out sarcoma (bone cancer) which is rare but has to be fully checked out. Hopefully it is not this but it is treatable. Good luck I wish you and DC all the best for tomorrow. My daughter’s friend is a teen and they had similar symptoms and it took a year to get a diagnosis as sarcoma but all being treated now and doing well.

bloodredfeaturewall · 16/10/2025 20:14

the drs are right to call back dc for a blood test after your description.

ime hospitals have ridiculous hours/procedures for paediatric blood tests and wait can be long.

if you can buy emla cream at the chemist and put it on both arms half an hour before blood is taken.
also take something nice to distract dc (book, video on tablet)

good luck

No experience but good luck and im praying its nothing serious. GP definitely did the right thing based on what you have explained x

One step at a time and the blood test is the first step. My nephew’s diagnosis was a shock but his treatment was successful, I don’t want to scare you but he had leukaemia. My DB and SIL noticed similar symptoms and the GP took them seriously as it sounds like yours has too. I know how stressful it is and please try not to worry too much, it is normal to start with tests like these.

toastandegg · 16/10/2025 20:41

My dd had similar - the blood test showed very low white blood cells, she spent a few days in hospital whilst they ruled out leukaemia and did a few other tests but ultimately she was fine and there seemed no real explanation, she got better over the following months and is now a healthy 17 yo

Just a handhold from me as no useful advice - one step at a time, just focus on getting to, and then through, the next step. Mn is a great support in these times xx

Adhdmum2 · 17/10/2025 07:51

Thank you all for your support. Obviously our worry is a cancer of some kind which seems like a huge leap from where we have started but naturally your mind goes to the worst option. Blood test is at 12 today so I don't know what to expect with results because of the weekend. Hoping anything serious would be called through as soon as they know.

A very abnormal blood test would be communicated ASAP to GP or out of hours service for prompt action. Hoping everything is ok for your DS.

Adhdmum2 · 17/10/2025 17:53

Had the blood test today. Some results are back and fine but some are not. We aren't sure which we are waiting for. Gp said the other result will be back next week and we will know more then.
It's a very odd feeling waiting for the phone to not ring as they said anything concerning would be sent to gp or out of hours and a call would be made. I'm sure I'm worrying for nothing.
Felt very sorry for ds today, the blood wouldn't come out of the first site so they had to go in again in another site. He did really well though bless him. I fed him harribo as the needle went in, like you would feed a dog treats for a trick!
Thank you for the support.
Does anyone know which blood test would show leukemia or a sarcoma and if that would be a longer wait for that test?

@Adhdmum2my nephew’s GP rang within 24 hours of the blood test to say go to the hospital now and named the doctor that would be waiting for them

Adhdmum2 · 20/10/2025 18:00

Found today that full blood count is borderline due to slightly raised platelets. Need to wait to see if xray shows anything tomorrow to see if this is something or nothing.
