I need a new Kindle, which one would you choose?

Why are there so many options?!

I've had my Kindle for years, it's an original paper white, but it's irritatingly slow and now I'm having issues charging it. It has to be propped up upside down and, again, it's frustratingly slow. So I'm going to invest in a new one as I use it a lot. I really like to use it in the night if I can't sleep, as it doesn't keep dp awake.

Does anyone have this one? Is it worth the money?

I just bought a new one it's so much better than the old one which wasn't keeping a charge for more than a day and had got scratched . I used mine every day. This new one is definitely lighter, a little bigger screen and I like the warm / night light option .
But I just bought the black paper white one at 169 (plus a case which was also on offer) because the others didn't seem to have the option for going ad free . I certainly didn't want ads ..

I went for a Kobo Clara B&W as I wanted to be able to borrow books from the library. It’s brilliant to have that option.

Get the kindle oasis with page turning buttons. So so good battery lasts forever

Ditto.

My current Kindle is fine, but I'm probably going to change to a Kobo then next time that I have to replace it. Probably a Clara Colour, but I'm also considering a Libra Colour so that I can use it as a notebook too.

I bought a new kindle last year to replace an old paper white.

If you can wait for Black Friday there were discounts last year - I bought a 16gb (which seems plenty) with adverts (which are no trouble, you just see one page as you switch it on, nothing while you are reading) and with trade in it cost £95.

I’m really happy with it, like you I read a lot during the night and the new dark mode is even less obtrusive. And the battery lasts for ages.

Definitelynotme2022 · 15/10/2025 12:51

I hadn't thought about a Kobo. Thanks for that, I'll have a proper look and not just automatically order a Kindle.

OP, I have that kindle. I got it in the summer when it was on an offer and it came with a case and a wireless charger. I bought to replace my old one. The battery lasts ages. I've charged it three times, including the initial charge. I love the way I can charge warmth, brightness etc. The only, slight, downside is that it needs WiFi to download new books, whereas my old one had it's own 3g connection.

I really liked my original kindle with buttons, can do all the page turning from the left side if I want to.
They don't seem to be making the Oasis anymore though, all the one I can see are refurbished ones.

I have the kindle paperwhite signature and it's great, I looked at the coloured kindles in the recent prime day specials but decided to stick with the black and white version.

tobee · 15/10/2025 14:48

They probably don't do the oasis anymore because it was ridiculously expensive

I hadn't heard of this brand before; it'd be great to have the functionality to borrow from the library e-books.

Can I ask; does it let you download Kindle books from Amazon, or transfer your existing library from your Kindle? Is the battery life comparable to kindle?

I’m sorry I’ve never had a kindle so not sure but I think that it doesn’t. I think the 2 systems are mutually exclusive, rather annoyingly.
battery life of my kobo I thought was v good - took it on a 3 week holiday and didn’t have to charge it.

No, you can’t do that sadly. I probably shouldn’t say this, but if I was you and I wanted to switch device brands, I wouldn’t feel bad about pirating any books you’ve already bought so you can have them on your new device. It’s ridiculous that they lock you in.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 15/10/2025 18:12

There is a video here about moving books over. I haven't tried it as I don't have a Kobo yet.

I recently got the color paperwhite. I thought it was silly until I saw one in person.

DH and I were in a store that had them on display. He had been keen but thought it was awful. I saw it and something about the muted color scheme made it so much easier for my brain to page through the library. It was like the device was made for me. It was instantly calming.

while you are reading a book it is no different than any other kindle paperwhite, but I love the launch screen and the library. It just makes my ASD brain sigh with relief every time I pick it up.

namechangeaaargh · 15/10/2025 18:34

I just have the cheapest Kindle and it's pretty good, the display is much better than its predecessor was. You should also be able to trade in your old one even though it's not working properly.

BTW it is possible to get library books (or any epub) onto a Kindle using Calibre and a plugin. It might not be terribly ethical to break the DRM but I delete them once I've read them.
