Please please please tell me which washing machine to buy!

Two small kids plus a trip away plus a backlog of laundry means that the washing machine keeling over this morning was a disastrous start to the week. Going out this afternoon to buy one but the choice is bewildering - need recommendations, please!

We have a budget of £400-£500, needs to be a larger load capacity (ideally 10kg), and we don’t need fancy features, just a really solid, good quality, reliable washer. Oh and we need to be able to get it from Currys or one of the big chains.

Would really appreciate your recommendations!

I have a 8 kg AEG one ( yes they do bigger) with steam function , love it, about £500, 5 yr warranty, now 18 months in, love it, just cat and I tho

I’d ask re noise levels. My Neff is way quieter than the one it replaced. The best feature on mine is to load and set it on a night to be finished on a morning. I can then hang out and it’s not sitting around getting stale

Oh no! It's always the way isn't it!
In your circumstances,
I would choose whatever the store has in immediate stock, within your budget and can deliver and install ASAP.
Also a thing I'd look out for is a higher spin speed, at least 1400 rpm, ideally 1600 rpm.
Your laundry will come out of the machine that much "drier" than lower spin speeds.
I've always bought Bosch.

In your shoes, the first question to ask is "what's in stock and can be delivered tomorrow or within 48 hours." That usually hones it down to a choice between about two to four, then you make your compromises.

Anything that has a quick wash under the ridiculous 2/3 hour average cycle. Quick wash loads are so so useful with small dc.

I have bottom on the range entry level Miele. Nothing fancy and it is a workhorse for me.

I am not sure of the price of them now though, sorry.

I had a similar scenario just before Christmas one year. I went into curry’s on the last school day before Christmas and picked the one with the fastest spin speed 🤣

Bosch we have had a similar Bosch appliance since 2018. Family of 5 with 2 sporty kids and washing on about 3-4 times a week.

When I input all the filters with your criteria, Curry's is showing up 11 models, but you will get a more accurate results if you enter your postcode OP.
Hopefully even more successful if you're into the store.
Good luck!

We got a LG steam 10kg pretty simple to use buy it direct from LG, it's free delivery and £100 trade in of your old machine there original price l was £549 reduced to £399.98 then £100 trade in if you have one and also extra 5 per cent off if you become a member of LG and that gets you the free delivery. Think we ended up paying £290ish and it's a great washing machine

LalalalalaItGoesAroundTheWold · 13/10/2025 12:37

I have 10kg Haier direct motion one. Good one and quietter than any I had before.

minipie · 13/10/2025 12:41

I have an LG Direct Drive 11kg machine, going strong since 2011 (have I jinxed it now…). No idea on cost these days but would recommend.

Definitely go for the biggest load capacity possible, makes life 10x easier doing fewer loads.

Topseyt123 · 13/10/2025 12:47

Bosch for me. I've generally got about 15 years, sometimes more, out of them. Generally around the £300 -£400 mark, I seem to remember.

I nearly always buy major appliances from AO.com and they are most often delivered the next day.

Flightyfox · 13/10/2025 12:52

Look out for a long warranty. I always fuck up the bearings in mine so the warranty is worth it.

GlitteringCBeams · 13/10/2025 13:15

Brilliant - thanks everyone, I really appreciate having some brand names with positive stories. I think we’re going to go for a Bosch one as it meets all the criteria and is in stock etc.

Honestly, of all the things to happen on a Monday morning . . . Grin
