Which is your favourite in 5 words or
less? Mine is Sense and Sensibility. Because Elinor.

S&S: Sibling relationship perfect. Also, Brandon.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/10/2025 09:46

S&S - Brandon does it for me

Sad that I am alone in my love of Sense and Sensibility….

No you're not! I love it too. One of my faves. I admire Elinor so much.

Sheesh, ask me for my favourite child, why don't you! I can't pick. It used to be P&P, but as I get older Persuasion is it. S&S and Emma are so good too. Damn.

Ok, if I have to choose:

Persuasion - half agony, half hope.

BestIsWest · 12/10/2025 10:03

Persuasion. The tension, the letter.

Also changed from P&P as I’ve aged.

WeeAgnes · 12/10/2025 10:08

P&P.

Colin.
Firth.
Lake.
Wet.
Phwoar.

(Sorry not )

Canicule · 12/10/2025 10:11

Pride and Prejudice - because of the opening line.

Sets the scene; tells the story succinctly and beautifully...
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.

Yes-Persuasion is definitely for when you’re properly grown up. As Antonia Forest tells us.

Ooh, can't choose!

Maybe P&P just because it's iconic.

S&S because of the sisters' relationship.

Emma because of Miss Bates! (I'm a very well intentioned, impoverished, loquacious spinster, so...!)

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 12/10/2025 10:15

Emma: “it was badly done indeed.”

PastaAllaNorma · 12/10/2025 10:19

P&P.

No. Just NO.

Shouts into the abyss that it's not even in the book, god damn it.

OhVictoriahavesomechocolate · 12/10/2025 10:22

No more than 5 words, folks!

[Numbers don't count]

Well, exactly. It’s the “Tell me you haven’t read any Jane Austen without telling me you haven’t read any Jane Austen” response.

Deadringer · 12/10/2025 10:47

In order of favourite, though the first two are close (and ignoring the 5 word rule as I already posted one of those)

1 p&p
2 persuasion
3 sense and sensibility
4 emma
5 lady Susan
6 Mansfield park
7 northanger abbey

stringsoup · 12/10/2025 11:00

persuasion - you pierce my soul

Oh, I love Northanger Abbey. Love all the stereotypes-the boy racer, the pick me girl, Catherine’s mother saying she was glad she hadn’t known about her making that long journey alone while it was happening, but she was so glad that Catherine had coped so well. Such a mother thing to say!. So many good characters.

It’s my favourite too. Possibly just because there’s such cultural saturation of P&P that it’s hard to forget any of it for a reread. Whereas S&S has some novelty if you’ve not read it for a few years. And I find it slightly less cringey for some reason.

Persuasion. The letter

You beat me to it!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 12/10/2025 15:42

Northanger Abbey is my favourite! I love the misunderstandings and it's very very funny.

I must be alone in the world in finding Colin Firth a bit pudding-faced and mostly thinking about the waterweed in that scene in the BBC adaptation.

You are not alone.

I also don't like the woman who played Elizabeth to Firth's Darcy.

And Alison Steadman is an abomination in it.

Problemhooves · 12/10/2025 16:29

Pride and Prejudice. BBC series!

AnneElliott · 12/10/2025 17:13

Persuasion (obviously). Because of slow burn love story

TypeyMcTypeface · 12/10/2025 18:28

Favourite character - Mr Rushworth. I'd marry him, be faithful & enjoy spending his money 😄

DisplayPurposesOnly · 12/10/2025 18:35

Emma. Reason 1 - handsome clever rich my aim 😂 Reason 2 - Clueless.
