Have been alcohol free for two months - it now tastes disgusting!

My husband became unwell at the end of August and subsequently cannot drink alcohol any more.

We used to be regular wine / lager drinkers on weekends but I’ve stopped drinking too as it felt a bit unfair to him.

This evening I spied a bottle of lager chilling in the fridge, husband is out so I thought oooh I’ll have that.

It is FOUL! It tastes like pure alcohol, like I imagine IPA (tape cleaner 🤣) would taste.

This has been such an eye opener I was a bit sad at the thought of not socially drinking again but it’s exactly what I needed. It honestly tastes like poison!

maybe something was wrong with it.

I’ve never met a mum who’s had that reaction after being off drink for 9+ months..

I stopped drinking a few years ago and I had all sorts of emotions and fears caught up with it that led to strange ideas like this.

and emotions and fears sounds really dramatic but it wasn’t really; more about having been a regular drinker since 16 years old it was a big habitual and emotional change.

id imagine it’s more that than actually alcohol has been vile all along and you just never noticed until you had a break

When I gave up for a while I loved the first drink!

Yep, I totally feel you on this.

I had a big bender a few months ago - drank far too much- and swore off drink.

A couple of times in recent weeks I've thought I'd have a sip of beer or prosecco and it tastes rank and like absolute poison. I really don't understand how I used to enjoy the taste.

I even checked I was pregnant (nope).

Someone else on here said it could be hormonal/ peri menopause.

Whatever it is, I'm grateful, as I had been wasting a tenner a week on a bottle, which probably wasn't great for my health

I think your taste buds do change when you stop eating things. I have not eaten meat for a couple of years for gastric reasons. The other day my DH cooked himself a steak and it looked delicious. I asked for a taste and it was revolting. I had difficulty getting it down.

I am 52 and deep in perimenopause. I wonder if it’s that’s too.

I've been sober 5 years and wine smells like vinegar, spirits like paint stripper.

There's a theory it tastes bad because its poison and we've developed to detect poison by taste so it tastes bad but then we also have developed so that if we keep drinking poison we learn to like it. I don't know if I believe it but it's what I've read.
