Are you average, or great?

I’ve always wanted to be great at things, but have come to the realisation that I’m not actually very amazing at anything. But can do lots of things at a basic level.

Average weight/height/size
Average salary/job
Average house
Average cars
Average fitness
Average cook

I am so average at so many things and even when I take up new things, I never really excel at anything. I’d love to be GREAT at something.

Things that I’m quite good at: driving, making friends, my sport, reading, planning stuff (house admin), booking holidays.

But I’ve never solved a cold case, ran a marathon, got promoted. Heck, I struggle to keep a plant alive.

I just wonder what it might feel like to be amazing at something. Like a great singer. Or have an amazing garden. Or be a surgeon. Or have great general knowledge.

Is anyone else distinctly average, or if not, what are you great at and how does that feel?

Im not very good at cleaning, or interior design, or sticking to a diet either…

Both! Average is great as already stated

I'm super average. Anyone I know who is way above average have significant challenges, particularly with relationships, so I think on balance I'd rather be average.

Plugsocketrocket · 08/10/2025 18:48

I love being steadfastly average. I cannot imagine having to excel at something consistently, oh the pressure. I love my life though, that is amazing for me.

I’m absolutely crap and average op.

Crap at most things so no hobbies. I hold down a job which I fake being good at, half-arse domestic stuff, I’m a bit of a bossy crap wife, crap mum (although the kids forgive me and think it’s part of my charm), crap with money, crap house that needs fully redecorating in a really crap town, disfunctional family and I’m an average type of friend - don’t rely on me for anything. I’m fat and quite unattractive and spend my evenings slobbing on MN or watching tv to distract me from my boring ordinary life.

Oddly though… I am very happy in my crappy average life and I thank God every day for the gift of it. 😇

Also fairly average but below average organisation skills unfortunately.I am great at my career which is niche so that's my thing I suppose. I'm a good problem solver and okay public speaker too.
Have always loved the idea of having an amazing talent but good to know that that desire is quite average!

mamaduckbone · 08/10/2025 19:58

I'm also extremely average and pretty happy with it.

I'm great at baking though, which is a nice skill to have and gets me lots of compliments!

I am the epitome of Jack of all trades, can turn my hand to most things, not amazingly but it can be done fairly easily. Probably through sheer stubbornness than anything else though due to a disability I have that means I'm determined to win over that fucker.

Except dancing and exercise classes, I have two left feet/cannot follow an instructor at all. Going to a zumba class was honestly one of the worst things I've ever done.

Slightly different...I realised in my early 40s that I'm not pretty. I'm not the stuff of nightmares but distinctly average with a very forgettable face.

More importantly, I'm just fine with that 😀

Being great at things can be so central to our identity that accepting we are, in the end, only average can be a bitter pill to swallow.

I find it helpful to reframe the thought process. If I am not, in fact, brilliant what else am I? Well I'm kind, open, imaginative. I like children and animals. I like reading, climbing, ice skating, languages, chess. I'm great at none of these things, but liking them is enough.

I think I am good at:
My job - spreadsheets, computers
Word games
Sprinting
Err...I'm sure there's other stuff

I'm terrible at:
Organisation, remembering all my stuff
Anything involving spatial awareness

Ok weight, slightly above average salary, otherwise unremarkable...but I still like me.
