Do you watch tv while eating dinner?

We do.
Our table is in our living room and we can see the tv from the table(it's quite a big room) although I tend to eat on my lap on the sofa (dc have to sit at table)
eg yesterday we all watched Wednesday - probably not the ideal dining company as it was a gruesome episode!

those of you that eat in front of the tv in the sitting room…does your sitting room not just smell of food all the time then?

RedRiverShore5 · 03/10/2025 12:28

We watch Pointless while having dinner on our lap, or a recording of Gardeners World, something like that, nothing you have to concentrate on. There are only us two adults though

Blarn · 03/10/2025 12:29

No, we have the radio on while we are a the table. The only exception is if there is a really big sporting final like the Euros or Seven Nations that dh wants to watch and very occasionally at the end of a long week dc get to have a picnic on the floor and pick something to watch on TV.

But we like eating at the table, we have really nice conversations. My family always ate off laps with the tv on growing up and I much prefer the table.

Our kitchen and living room is open plan so it makes absolutely no difference 🤷‍♀️

We have a lounge/diner knocked out through room, style probably from the 70s so would make no difference, table in kitchen is very small so really only suitable for breakfast type meals or snacks.

Never. Always sit at the table

sweetpickle2 · 03/10/2025 13:21

Eat at the table, radio no telly (unless it's a takeaway and then we eat on our laps on the sofa with something on the TV as a treat!)

I love catching up with my OP about his day over proper conversation- we used to live in a small flat with no dining area and eat all our meals on our laps in front of the TV, we are noticeable closer as a couple since we stopped doing this every day.

Hellohelga · 03/10/2025 13:23

Never. All meals at table in kitchen, no tv, no phones, we chat about our day, news, plans etc not about Dawn off East Enders. Tv is for after.

MummaMummaMumma · 03/10/2025 13:23

No, we eat at the table. No tv or phones.
We sometimes watch a film eating pizza at the weekend x

lalaloopyhead · 03/10/2025 13:24

When the kids were growing up we had dinner at the table. Now its just me, DH and DD3 we rarely do - DD tends to have dinner earlier (she still sits at the table but prefers to be alone) and then me and DH mostly have ours on our lap infront of the TV.
We still sit at the table for special occasions and family meals but that tends to not be very often.

Not that I am aware, but who knows! We are just eating in the front room though, not frying chips or anything.

CatchTheWind1920 · 03/10/2025 13:27

No. We eat at the table. I never had that as a kid and felt I missed out.
I love dinners around our table. Our boys tell us about their days and it's a nice half hour before the evening chaos lol.

ToldYouTwiceAlready · 03/10/2025 13:28

Never. We've always eaten dinner at the table, and the tv is off at that time.

Hellohelga · 03/10/2025 13:29

Yesterday in the gym I noticed how most teens are glued to their screens every second they aren’t working out, despite a no phone policy. I wanted to tell them to put it down, look around, observe or just sit with your thoughts. Many young people aren’t able to do this as they haven’t had enough practice at non screen time.

AgnesMcDoo · 03/10/2025 13:31

Never - we eat in the kitchen for most meals or dining room if feeling fancy.

we allow phones at the tables for breakfast and sometimes at dinner if people need to decompress.

MinnieMountain · 03/10/2025 13:33

Generally we’ll have something easy in front of the TV on a Saturday. Otherwise not.

IAmThePrettiestManOnMyIsland · 03/10/2025 13:42

We eat at the dining table. Dinner time is family time and a chance to discuss what we've been up to in the day or talk about what is going on in the world.
We do occasionally eat in front of the TV if there is some live event worth watching, usually with a dominos.

Belladog1 · 03/10/2025 13:57

When I moved to my house after separating from my husband I was determined that I would eat at the dining table every night. I would sit listening to music, looking out at the garden ... enjoying my meal and having a glass of wine.

Yep - that lasted about 2 weeks. I now sit with my dinner on my lap watching TV !!

If I was eating something messy with gravy, then I would eat at the table, but normal dinners are in front of the telly.

AutumnnotFall · 03/10/2025 13:59

We do both; it isn't either or.

LarryIsMyRomanEmpire · 03/10/2025 13:59

Yes, but I live on my own, when DD was here we still did though, it worked for us.

Empress13 · 03/10/2025 14:00

Just had new sofa so eat at table !

ChocolateCinderToffee · 03/10/2025 14:01

I live alone. Either tv on my laptop or a book.

DinoLil · 03/10/2025 14:02

Never used to until DC left home. I've gone from sitting at a table to a plate on lap in front of the TV.

DancingNotDrowning · 03/10/2025 14:03

We’ve got into a habit of eating dinner in front of the TV.

Weekend lunch is usually at the dining table and breakfast at the island or the kitchen table.

but evenings, unless we have people over can be kind of lazy
