Flying tomorrow: Backpacking/ Working Travel Insurance Needed

LastMinuteTravelInsurance · 02/10/2025 20:02

Nephew flying to Australia tomorrow to travel and work casually. Belatedly finding insurance for this is more complex than he was expecting 🙄 Has anyone got any recommendations for travel insurance?

Thanks!

Look for backpacker insurance, google it and a whole bunch of insurers will come up. Whether you can get cover at such a late stage is debatable as your DN ought to have looked at it at the time of booking flights as those are not likely to be covered now.

He's spoken to brokers, there's no question the flight won't be covered. That's fine. It's just trying to find a decent company/policy.

It is a minefield. Some don’t cover working. My son went for Big Cat in the end.

Thanks. They seemed to have some bad reviews for actual claims, but I'll look again.

I read somewhere recently that an insurer wouldn’t pay out as no return ticket had been purchased on an 8 month back packing cover. Please check the small print.

Yep this is a major thing. We used True Traveller and they covered my appendix bursting on a rural Asian island well and easily. Loved them.
