Is it me, or are people these days very entitled?

Now, I don’t know if this is just a very Surrey thing as I live in that part of the Country or it’s like it across the whole Country. So excuse my ignorance if so.

But, where I live (South Surrey) I find people to be terribly rude, more especially on the road!

So my experiences I’ve come across are in general public: (people trying to queue jump in the shop, people judging rather than smiling or saying morning or afternoon and being extremely self righteous!) Now when it comes to driving on the other hand: (people using their phones while driving, people not parking but abounding their cars at road sides even on double yellows!! People not acknowledging you when you give way to them or let them in front of you. People tailgating you even though when you’re just over the speed limit! People just using their horn just because they’re angry. People not obliging to the Highway Code!) These are a few things I’ve come across with the general public in recent years and it’s getting worse! But why are people being like this?

Tell me your thoughts?

I haven't voted because I don't find people like this at all where I live.
People are as friendly, patient and courteous as they always have been in my part of rural Somerset.

I haven't generally found entitlement to be a huge issue where I live (suburban housing estate in the West Country) nor have I noticed people getting worse.

Benny91 · 02/10/2025 16:29

I guess this sort of behaviour happens in Surrey then… Any Mumsneters from Surrey happy to clarify?

Also in South Surrey and agree with you, OP!

Its definitely a Surrey thing. Just awful.

Pootles34 · 02/10/2025 16:44

Not recognised this in Yorkshire, thankfully.

PrioritisePleasure24 · 02/10/2025 16:44

I work in the NHS, feel like many of (not all) of the general public became more self entitled and rude post covid. I also see it out and about too, people being noisy in cinemas/theatres, not bothering to queue and push on instead, rude to staff in different places for no reason at all, parents to teachers. etc

I live in Gtr Manchester and of course we still have plenty of lovely, friendly, courteous people too luckily.

dontmalbeconme · 02/10/2025 17:20

I'm in Surrey, and I don't recognise this at all. People are generally friendly and nice.

YogaLite · 02/10/2025 17:24

Interesting...i have moved from Kent to Surrey and the adverse behaviour difference is staggering 😕. Never experienced anything similar in a few other counties I have been visiting recently...

SeaAndStars · 02/10/2025 17:39

It seems you need a 'They're from Surrey' option in your list OP.
