Primary and secondary start times

Why do primaries start later than secondaries? Teenagers need more sleep and prefer to get up later, parents going to work would benefit from earlier drop off for younger children, siblings that may walk younger children to school on their way in can’t as will be late etc.

Our secondary starts 5 minutes earlier than the primary. 8:40 vs 8:45. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Someone has to start earlier because some parents have multiple drop offs. It ends 20 minutes earlier though.

My DC's primary school had a definitive start time... whereas my DC's secondary school gives a half hour window for them to come in.

Our secondary starts 10 min earlier than the primary. The secondary school day is longer than the primary school so starting later than primary would mean they were in school till nearly teatime.

Realistically though, I wouldn’t want to leave my secondary age child home alone and go to work (nor would I want to be dealing with the hassle of getting them out the door during working hours). I have to drive them to the bus stop as it’s a walk across fields and down a busy A road with no footpath to the bus stop. I drop them off before work and that works well. Fine for a 16 year old to walk alone. Not for an 11 year old though.

The secondary day is likely to be longer than the Primary school day.

Though, neither of the secondaries my dc went to started earlier than the Primary school they went to.

Might be my area then - secondaries start 30-40 minutes earlier.

Dc1 secondary starts at 8.25 Vs 8.45 for primary. Finish time at secondary is 3.10 (with a 45 mins lunch break) but most people do activities after school. Primary finishes at 3.25 with an hour break.
