Moving to be mortgage free for a year or so

My job has been killing me for years. I moved sideways about 14 months ago but still get periodic panic / anxiety attacks, ruined weekends. Etc. It pays well and is flexible and I wfh. However I decided quite a while ago I was getting out and I have only hung in there while DH gets his business off the ground. His business is now up and running, stable and doing well. I am enrolled to study full-time for a year next year. For my new career (after a lot of soul searching).

We live overseas. We have just sold our house in the UK and have enough equity to buy a house here mortgage free in a not great area. That would also put in zone for a very good school that we really want our DS to go to.

I have suggested we buy somewhere mortgage free to live in for a year so I can give up my job completely and study full-time without having to work as well. (Which I would have to do next year if we get a mortgage in the area we are currently in.) My new career is relatively promising for jobs but worst case scenario I could go back to it temporarily if things hit the fan.

Has anyone done this? I’m just looking for perspective. DH is on the fence a bit I think because the commute to the children’s current schools would be a bit of a mission (not really though) but I honestly past the point of worrying about things like that after years of this.

For me it would depend on what you mean by a not great area. No shops/coffee shops/ having to drive to a supermarket. Possibly. High crime rate/run down or no friends for my kids no I wouldn’t want to live there
