Gym vs a home strength training - where are you most consistent?

I have been a local council gym member for many years, and depending on what life throws at me, went through periods of mainly classes or at the moment self-training. It’s local network, my town gym is for self training only, and the nearest with classes is 20 mins drive.

As I WFH now, I can’t be bothered to drive out to classes one, feels like a waste of time - in the past, that gym was on way home. So, I mainly use equipment. Until the gym was redone and now it seems geared up for and attracted a lot of gym bros,
posing longer than lifting, there is nowhere to do proper mat work, a lot machines and bulky vanity dumbbells. All other gyms are very expensive.

I am on holiday now in a hotel and have been doing Caroline Girvan workouts on a mat outside. 30 - 40 mins, no travel, no gurning bros.

This has made me think that for £360 a year I can buy all the free weights I will ever need to train at home. But, I am not sure if I will become completely feral, WFH all day and then not having a buffer of going out to the gym for a change, especially as the nights get dark. Just curious if anyone has switched to at home training and found that it’s better?

I think if you've got the discipline to travel 20 mins for a workout regularly, you've probably got the same discipline to switch that to a work out at home.

I'm fairly consistent BUT I do have a PT who comes to my house once a week & keeps me on track.
I have some free weights & a couple of kettle bells, which get used a couple of times a week. Probably an outlay of less than £100 for good quality kit - cast iron KBs etc.
The most annoying thing is where to keep it.

My super fit friend has a Les Mills subscription that she swears by & she is very consistent.

I switched to at home during Covid. I have a barbell and plates, a set of adjustable dumbbells (2.5kg - 25kg), plus a few other dumbbells and kettlebells.

I’m also a Combat instructor and do a bit of running. I have Les Mills and the Runna app - oh and the Zumba app, which i also used to instruct in.

I still flirt with the gym, but like you I really begrudge the travel time these days! I can walk the dog and do a workout at home before I need to log on.

Gym for me. I'm in a similar situation to you but I do drive past the gym on my way back from the school run so it is convenient.

I'm quite disciplined but I lack the variety at home. I still do home workouts but they are different to my gym workout - I'll lift weights in the gym but do most of my cardio or hiit workouts at home. I can't get the quality at home with my strength training as I don't have enough weights to work hard enough.

I was doing great doing CG workouts at home for 2 years. DH wanted me to join a gym with him so I switched. Ended up gradually reducing my workouts from 5 a week at home to 2 a week at the gym becuase of all the faff involved with getting there/getting changed etc. I then had a couple of medical issues which stopped me going completely for a few weeks.

It is an annual membership and looking foward to it ending so I can get my routine at home going again.

Gym for me. I use the cable machine during every session. It’s just so versatile.

However, if I could have a cable machine at home I’d probably pick home workouts. Zero travel time and straight into the shower in the comfort of home instead of the changing rooms at the gym.

I've never used a gym but I think home is so much easier as no turning out in the cold to make excuses over. Quicker, easier, you can get home subscriptions these days etc
