Shall We Just Go On Holiday - As Planned !

My mother pestered to book a particular holiday (coach trip to European city).
This is her choice and not something I’d have chosen.
She booked it all and paid her share (25%).
I paid the rest for myself, DD & DS.

My mother has caused lots of drama in the past couple of weeks, and has threatened to pull out of holiday - telling me to ask a friend to go instead of her. It’s too late to ‘ask a friend’ - all my friends work and/or have holiday plans with their own family.
I really don’t want to go now, but I can’t let the children down, especially at such short notice. So l feel I have to go irrelevant of whether she’s going or not.

I will never book anything with her again, the whole build up has been extremely stressful and I’m trying to maintain ‘excitement’ for the kids.

Please give me a kick up the bum to just go and enjoy myself, I feel so guilty for going without her ☹️

When are you meant to be going?
Do you think she will definitely not go?

CheeseWisely · 21/09/2025 21:57

Go of course! You’ll have a great time with your DC surely?

Justmuddlingalong · 21/09/2025 21:57

Go. She's caused drama and now isn't going. Sounds like a result.
Enjoy the holiday with your DH and DC even though it wasn't your choice of trip.

TheChosenTwo · 21/09/2025 21:58

How old are the kids? Do they definitely want to go? Where are you going? A coach trip sounds very… long! I wouldn’t want to do one and definitely not with smaller children.

BoarBrush · 21/09/2025 21:59

Ach go and enjoy yourself with the kids. Don't give her a single thought.

Finetoday · 21/09/2025 22:09

We’re going on Wednesday.

Children are 9 and 11 and are really looking forward to it - lots of snacks were brought today, and their devices are on charge ready ! They just like having time off school I think.

Is she saying she won’t go, but will go or does she mean it? Is this out of character for her? Is it the first time you’ve all gone away?
just wondering if she’s got overwhelmed by it and ended up showing it in this way.
if she goes, and starts being difficult you need to lay it straight. Stop making drama, and enjoy it, mum. Leave her to make coach friends and separate yourself a little.
if she doesn’t go, her loss, not yours.
either way no more holidays together.

Sorry OP all sympathy lost when you said you're taking your children out of school. Why?

TonTonMacoute · 22/09/2025 08:54

Of course go!

Sounds like it’s a good thing she’s pulled out, frankly, you can focus on you and the DCs getting the most out of it without your mum causing chaos.

Quite.

mamagogo1 · 22/09/2025 09:54

Please enjoy this trip but then give your head a wobble, don’t book holidays in term time, two reasons, one is they shouldn’t miss school unless an emergency and two, those of us without dc book in term time for peace and quiet, a coach trip really isn’t a child friendly holiday, will they really sit still for all those hours?

CafeDuck · 22/09/2025 13:45

A coach trip with school kids? You’re not going to be popular

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 22/09/2025 13:50

That could be A LOT of time on the coach OP. Do you know your schedule?

parietal · 22/09/2025 13:50

Cancel it and keep the kids in school. Term has just started and they need to be learning.

BigHouseLittleHouse · 22/09/2025 13:51

@CafeDuck thats what I thought too!

EscapeTheCastle · 22/09/2025 14:15

Missing school so early in the term as well. Probably not a great idea.

MellowPinkDeer · 22/09/2025 14:20

Taking the kids out of school for coach trip?!? That’s madness OP!
