Street lights hurt my eyes

Hi,

I wondered if I could ask whether anybody else has trouble with LED street lights hurting their eyes?

I understand that Balfour Beatty are doing a nationwide thing where they are installing new street light bulbs that are cheaper to run.

I always find LED light difficult, but I'm finding that the new street light bulb outside my house is particularly bad for my eyes.

I had a Balfour Beatty engineer come to visit and he said literally no one had ever contacted them about this before.

I just wondered if anybody else has this problem with street lights too?

Thanks!

I have a medical condition that makes my eyes very sensitive to light and I struggle with them. Unfortunately nothing I can do about it.

Thanks, that's good to know. Would it be okay to ask what it is? Maybe I have it too? I'm okay with all other light sources. It's just LEDs that bother me.

I have astigmatism and struggle a lot with night lights - esp led headlights and sometimes street lights. I’ve invested in yellow night glasses (like sunglasses but for night) which do help when I’m driving.
I absolutely hate the flashing LED that cyclists have. Drives me mad and I wonder how they are even allowed as they must be causing accidents for people like me.

Thanks, yes I'm the same. I have amber glasses for driving, which help a lot.

I also really dislike the flashing bike lights. It makes it hard to see anything else, which just makes things more dangerous for the cyclist who is wearing the light. I always try to overtake them.

I have my own bike lights covered with a filter that makes them less piercing, and I make sure they don't flash.

I turn the streetlight outside our house off, because it lights up the whole bedroom. We have blackout blinds and curtains, but I struggle to wake up in a fully darkened room and need a bit of daylight to get going.

Every now and again a van turns up and a man turns it back on again then I go out afterwards and turn it off. There are plenty of other lights along the street for the pedestrians in the winter.

HelpMeGetThrough · 17/09/2025 16:16

@bryterskyhow are you switching them off?

'There are plenty of other lights along the street for the pedestrians in the winter.' 😂

Surely this is the decision of the local council! You can't just go around switching street lights off and anyway .. as above, how?!
