HELP - where do I sew name tags onto rugby socks?

I am the default name tag sewer for my grandchildren. I have a pair of rugby socks that have to be labelled - it is a school requirement, GS loses everything, and his parents really can't afford to replace them.

Where do I sew the name tags? I'm pretty sure that they should be folded over at the top so I'm assuming that either they should be sewn on the outside, so that when the sock is folded over that is on the inside, or on the inside but further down maybe?

GS is very careless with his clothes. I can imagine him not bothering to either pull up his socks or not folding them over. He is coming up to 12 and not particularly fond of rugby so has little pride in his appearance in his sports kit.

Your wisdom would be greatly appreciated please!

And before anyone starts....
Yes they do have to be labelled
I can't do a lot to help my daughter so yes this is something that I do voluntarily
No she can't do it herself
Yes they do have to be proper sewn in name tags

I put them on the front seam near the toes that way dc when in reception could read and also others could see it wasn’t theirs.

Inside the turn down bit at the top.

how about he does it himself. If he's put to some inconvenience, he might learn to take better care of his things.

A nearly 12yo should be capable of sewing on a name tap e.

Do they definitely have turn down bits? My DDs are one solid colour with no turn downs for exmple.

Depending on colour... permanent marker on the sole.

But where would the sewer attach them? That was the question, not who should do it.

OP I’ve seen them sewn in little loops inside the turn up, or just stitched loosely at either end of the tape running vertically from top of sock downwards.

Thank you to those of you that gave helpful suggestions.

@HonoriaBulstrode - there is not a snowball's chance in hell of my grandson being able to sew on a name tag! His mother never learned to sew at school and I was working split shifts and not at home that much to teach her myself. Apparently they didn't even learn how to thread a needle at school and it seems that domestic science/needlework or whatever they call it nowadays is not on the curriculum at my grandson's prep school either.

And yes - I could teach him - but that would necessitate a wish to learn - I'm not his mother and so cannot unilaterally decide that he should do this.

On the bottom of the sock here on the outside. Doesn't rub the leg or show then.

Seeline · 17/09/2025 12:31

We were given a chart of where all the name tags had to be sewn! Rugby socks where on the outside of the turn down so that they could be clearly seen when being worn. Goodness knows why!

I'd look on the school website for a picture of them wearing them to double check if they have to fold them down. I think a lot of sports don't have these now as clubs opt for ease, and polyester...

Just remembered DD had her socks sewn in at School Blazer a couple of years ago and they did them on the outside, presumably assuming she would fold over the top as they were knee length (no, she didn't want to do that so they came back unused). So maybe that is the thing to do?

TheSandgroper · 17/09/2025 12:39

I put dd’s name tags on the top of the sock, under the laces, running ankle to toe so the sock could stretch sideward properly.

Sleepeatcrochetrepeat · 17/09/2025 12:40

Depending on the colour, sharpie across the toes. I figured I would never be looking to pass them on to anyone else, so I didn’t care about writing on them.

If it must be a tape, then across the toes seam or on the sole maybe?
