I'd say my cooking skills are variable. I can turn out decent food but occasionally make a totally dud meal.
Today's was broccoli and potato soup, inspired by the need to use up some lingering broccoli.
Well it was watery and uninteresting, has made the house stink of brassica and nobody finished their bowl, even though I seasoned it well and used good stock and added some parmesan on top. Just boring dishwater.
Make me feel better please, what have been your duds lately?

This thread is making me feel queasy 🤮 scrambled egg with sardines ??? 🤮🤮

whiteroseredrose · 15/09/2025 21:29

My worst ever was the white meal. Dc were young and I had just had enough. I made white fish in cheese sauce with mash. The only veg I had in was a cauliflower so that went alongside. Poor DH nearly cried!

Basically Anything i’ve ever made in the slow cooker (no longer own one) my worst one ever being “honey seasame chicken” i can’t remember what it tasted off just that it was bad and over 10 years later my daughter still casts up the fact it was so bad i binned it and we had to have beans on toast! My husband eats most things (some quite questionable) and he managed about 2 bites.
it was so bad the dog turned his nose up at it. I followed a recipe which lots of positive reviews exactly so i’m not sure what went wrong but that was the end of my brief dalliance with slow cookers!

My slow cooker went the same way. Everything I ever made ended up being soft sludge and regardless of the ingredients used, it all looked and tasted the same.

My ex thought he was the best cook in the world

He wasn't

I still have nightmares over the spag bol he made with boiled mince

It tasted like soap

And the sausage casserole that tasted like vomit

I forced it down but the kids couldnt-and they ate anything

My sister in law once made cheese on toast but just put the cheese on the side she was toasting and the other side was 'raw'

Worse I've ever made was a stew in the slow cooker

Who knew that leeks take over the whole flavour and that slow cooked beef would be so tough?

And dont get me started on the smell that lasted for days

edwinbear · 15/09/2025 21:46

I tried to replicate my mum’s corned beef hash once. I swear it was onions and tinned potatoes fried up until they went crispy, add a tin of coned beef, add a tin of baked beans and cook it through. Except it clearly wasn’t, because mum’s was delicious. Mine looked and tasted like a plate of congealed vomit.

My husband likes to experiment and made scrambled eggs with virgin olive oil. Awful, I couldn't stomach it, he ate it reluctantly admitting that it tasted like shit.

NoKnickerElastic · 15/09/2025 21:47

Jamie Oliver's fabulous fish recipe. I don't know what went wrong, he surely can't have intended it to be so tasteless and watery

BetteDavisChin · 15/09/2025 21:50

I made a pork curry 🤮 for a couple who were friends of my DP.
I had never made a curry before that day.
What the heck was I thinking?
Needless to say, it was pretty disgusting.
Poor pig.
I turned vegetarian shortly afterwards.
The guests probably did, too 😆

BitchinTwinset · 15/09/2025 21:56

I have made some nice slow cooker dishes from my slow cooker cookbook. I love sausages so thought I'd try a sausage and lentil casserole thing.
Sausages do not do well in the slow cooker. They went sort of spongy - I could barely eat it.

GreenDogDot · 15/09/2025 21:57

A roasted butternut squash risotto; on the final twist of black pepper to finish the grinder fell apart in my hands and emptied the entire pot of whole black peppercorns in to it. I was so annoyed having gone to the faff of butchering a squash, roasting it, then starting all the stirring that I ate it. Tried to pick as many as I could see out then just winced every time I bit in to a stray one.

I made a Tesco Swede and Coconut curry recipe. I like swede and I like coconut but it was rank. Just as well I'm not vegan as it would have made me eat a bacon butty to get the taste out of my mouth.

This sounds just horrible🤮

coxesorangepippin · 16/09/2025 02:20

I make a barley and broccoli soup once

It was fucking gross

Also I recently made a roasted vegetable cous cous salad. The cous cous was just dead wet?? So I had pie, chips and peas instead

coxesorangepippin · 16/09/2025 02:27

'let's just say that sprout soup isn't one of them'

😂

Gladysknightgottogetaholdofmyself · 16/09/2025 04:59

I cooked liver that was dry , drunken me thought korma sauce would be a good addition..it wasn't I was so sick in the morning because of the aftertaste 🤮🤮
The other was a fray bentos pie out of the tin.. uncooked.
Same result as above.

Tried to make red cabbage for xmas dinner twice. Followed recipes carefully, both times came out weird.

DramaAlpaca · 20/03/2026 11:24

I put a whole bulb of garlic in a dish once, some sort of veggie thing. I didn't realise until then that a bulb and a clove were not the same thing. Needless to say, it tasted horrible.

Owlmoonstar · 20/03/2026 11:36

Picked up a pack of turkey thigh mince on YS. Decided to use it in a Bolognese. It was disgusting. It had this overwhelming rich, sickly game meat type taste to it. I couldn't eat it. And I will never buy turkey thigh mince again.

Sourisblanche · 20/03/2026 11:39

I once made chocolate orange fudge that was inedible. I don’t know what I did wrong because I’m usually a decent baker. Even dh couldn’t eat it and he’s quite stoic about eating.

My girls used to cry when they'd get home from school and see the slow cooker out 😁

pictoosh · 20/03/2026 17:21

Agree about slow cookers...we've got one but I hardly use it. I don't mind a slow cooker meal once in a blue moon but yes, it's sludge and it tastes of slow cooker.
The kids hate it.

the80sweregreat · 20/03/2026 17:34

Sausage casserole. The sausages came out anemic and it was all just watery and weird.

Tastes of slow cooker! I love this. Im not keen on slow cooker meals either and I haven't been able to put it into words before but this is it. I know EXACTLY what you mean!

the80sweregreat · 20/03/2026 17:48

Slow cooked food had its own taste I think, even if you use different recipes and you have to pre cook a lot of it too ( for some recipes) They don’t really save much time , but people swear by them.

theworldisadarkplace · 20/03/2026 18:11

I made a yellow pepper soup last week. followed the recipe faithfully, but it was the most tasteless thing I've ever tasted. I rescued it by throwing in a load of red lentils and soft cheese, but I shan't be using that recipe again.
