How, and when did you discover Mumsnet?

I discovered it in March 2020 when someone on Twitter shared a very batty picture of the Trending sidebar. Loved it here ever since!

Outgrew twitter in 2023 iirc

It had been bought by musk and just became unusable

Needed specific advice about fireworks and since then I've become an addict 🙈

2010 - I needed to recruit parents for a survey for work and this seemed an obvious place to ask for help. Nothing came of it work wise but I’d come across a thread where a group of MNers discussed dressing up as zombies and having a party in a field to scare off a driver who was deliberately annoying someone every day and never left. It seemed my kind of place.

Roughly 2009 when I was googling Waitrose Baby Bottom Butter. I didn't want it for a baby (I'm not a mum) but there was a lot of hysteria about it being a miracle anti ageing product! Mumsnet was the first thing that came up.

2006 when having IVF. The fertility support board was amazing.

justasking111 · 15/09/2025 07:58

I remember with a new baby there was always someone to talk to in the middle of the night 😊

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/11/2025 09:12

Over 10 years ago when dd1 was pregnant with Gdc1.

Sartre · 28/11/2025 09:18

It was around 2012/13. I found the Christmas forum. I was looking for ways to make my then very very young DC’s Christmas as magical as possible. Think I found a thread about the elf on the shelf, or maybe the Poncetastic thread first and it went from there.

Around 2008. DS was 4. I had started a new job and in about my third week. My mentor was off sick and nobody could supervise the work I needed to do so boss told me to do some online training. I had about 4 hours to use up and the training took me 40 minutes so I had a little browse for birthday presents for DS.

I guess one of my searches brought up a Mumsnet thread and I was immediately hooked!

You can all throw rocks at me if you want but it was very different back then. Less trolls and more kindness! I still love it though 😘

Came for the breastfeeding advice (the children concerned are now adults). Still here for the feminism.

UserNumber56 · 28/11/2025 09:39

It was in 2004. I was Googling for information about the Nursery Grant/free nursery places and came across a conversation on Mumsnet about it.

I clicked on a few of the other active conversations (there weren't very many in those days!) and returned about once a week to the site to lurk. After a couple of months, I joined. There were fewer than 10,000 registered users at the time.

2003

We got Sky and the TV suddenly spoke English. I went from 15 years of barely watching TV to glued to the screen.

Mumsnet TV popped up, Justine and Carrie (sp ?) giving advice to a rather desperate looking man who was wanting to get around the supermarket without his toddler flipping out. Raisins were involved. They mentioned their forum. I joined.

BlakeCarrington · 28/11/2025 09:46

Penis beaker! A story on that tempted me here and I’ve never left.

Bumply · 28/11/2025 10:45

I was on Bad Mothers Club probably from late 90s when I had DS1.

Mumsnet would have threads posting about how strange and awful we were in BMC, so we’d return the favour and post about them.

When BMC closed down I switched over to Mumsnet and still read it now and then.

Berlinlover · 28/11/2025 14:16

I googled the word fibroids and found Mumsnet. I don’t have children but am probably slightly addicted to Mumsnet at this stage.

Statesider · 28/11/2025 14:40

2008, while pregnant with DD1. I think someone from my NCT antenatal class told me about it.

RenoDakota · 28/11/2025 14:45

2018, around the time my son was due to get his A Level results. Wasn't really on my radar before.
I spend far too much time on here but it is my go-to social media platform.

IBorAlevels · 28/11/2025 14:46

Around 2008 just before I became pregnant.
I was so shocked by the variation between utter support and utter contempt, depending on topic. Intrigued me and has taught me a lot about a wide variety of things, least of all myself, ever since.

MonsterBookOfTyson · 28/11/2025 14:48

2009 or 2010. I joined an antenatal group for October 2010 babies. Then I was a nobdie and then disappeared for a few years. It seems different now.

Stumbled upon it in 2020 ,loved the wide range of subject matter and it really helped during bad depressive episodes as it gave me something else to think about.
I NC often not for nefarious purposes and my NC have a running theme.

Yes, you have to NC these days, which is good for security but a bit of a shame as used to like "knowing" posters.

Notsoblackfriday · 28/11/2025 14:52

20 years ago when I googled something about house buying. Stayed for the drama

Velveletteslonleylonelygirlami · 28/11/2025 14:52

My NC are Northern soul records.

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 28/11/2025 14:59

I was on a hobby forum and a very well-known poster on there let us all know that someone had nicked their username, registered that name on MN and was doing a spot of impersonating. So I popped over to have a look to check that nobody had done it to me either and they hadn't - so I registered with that name on here to stop anyone else from taking it. Been here ever since.

CombatBarbie · 28/11/2025 15:04

Around the demise of baby world.....

Catpiece · 28/11/2025 15:12

2023 when reading about the mum who had disappeared after dropping her kids at school.
