New to MumsNet - what should I focus on first?

Hello

I’ve just joined MumsNet. I’ve browsed generally, but it would be really helpful to get some recommendations from seasoned users about the parts of the board I should focus on first.

I’m a married dad in my 40s if that makes any difference to your recommendations.

Thank you!

Well, that depends. What do you want to get out this (or any) forum?

Whatever it is, there will be a board for it.

Click ‘Talk’ and you’ll see lots of topics.

HansBanans · 14/09/2025 13:38

Came to say the same as @SoScarletItWas

None whatsoever, why would it?

You haven't told us anything about your hobbies, likes/dislikes etc, so how can we possibly recommend?

Just click about the Active topic and see what takes your fancy.

Try not to join in with 'man here' or similar bollocks, as 99.9% of the time it makes no difference at all.

Try not to be to bitchy.
Know when to walk (metaphorically) away from a argument.
Try not to fall for the troll posts - especially ones with sob stories about money.
Personally I would say don't use the stupid abbreviations because they annoy me 😂

DiscoBob · 14/09/2025 13:57

How are we meant to know what topics you're interested in? Have you not been on an internet forum before?
Look through them and go into the ones you like the look of. As you would anywhere.

My new top tip for you is: we can see the original by clicking on ‘edited’. Didn’t take you long!

If you like camping try the Camping board. If you like to exercise try the Exercise board. If you have cats try the My House Smells board. And try chat for general chat.

@CaringDentist Welcome.

Chat is a good general topic to start with, and not usually harsh like AIBU.

There's a list of topics (link below) so look for topics that match your lifestyle and interests - or just topics that sound interesting! You can 'lurk' - read without posting anything - to get a feel for the the topic - often best to do that before pitching in, especially if the thread is controversial.

And he's not posted since.

Ah, a creepy guy getting off over chatting to women on a female heavy internet forum.
